Nanocom EVO 1.01 Firmware update released.

Just logged into web.nanocom.it and noticed that the EVO firmware 1.01 update was posted on the 8/9/2011.

    From the change log:

    FIXES:
    ------------------------------------------------
ACE bug fixed -Set TESTED option removed which caused the ECU to go in a virgin state.

    Graphic controller firmware bugs fixed

Unit works with SDHC memory card (tested 8GB-16G

    Assorted typo`s Fixed

Improved memory handling from BBSV1.00 to avoid possible corruption of the Firmware Flash memory.

Improved TD5 live data reading from BBSV1.00 because on some vehicles communication was dropping causing system freeze etc when the engine was running.

    NEW COVERAGE ADDED:
    ------------------------------------------------
SRS-Airbag and Auto Gearbox Automatically included with existing Discovery II unlock code.

Motronic 5.2.1 V8 Engine Management which requires additional / optional license purchasing.

    CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS:
    ------------------------------------------------
The USB connectivity has been simplified to support easier all in one upgrading, and minimise user created file errors on the Flash Drives.

Sounds like it should make a lot of EVO owners very happy. It looks like Nanocom One owners will have to wait a little bit longer.

The upgrade went smooth, took about 10 min.

if you check the 'overwrite target config' button be prepared to re-input your unlock codes.
Now I can check out the new features.

If I'm not mistaken there are also some new or revised documents in the download area too.

Yep, we are certainly now Busy Busy Busy after our re location woes.
TBH we are really pleased to now get back to some form of normal buisiness

As you note, upgrading for the evo has now been made into a childs play all in one job.

We expect to release an equivilent update for Nanocom one owners within the next working day or so also.

TBH the upgrades for both have not been as thoughly beta tested as we would have wished, due to our re location woes, but since both introduce new upgrade methodology that once tried and tested we can easily build upon later, these first upgrades have their own value and significance.

Just a bit more info about the BBS V1.01 upgrade.

Firstly my apologies for not posting up about having actually already released it.

The BBS V1.01 upgrade can be applied to any Nanocom Evo, as we do not differenciate between an existing EVO 1 type and our revamped EVO 2.
So this upgrade represents the possibility for all EVO owners to gain the benefits and added coverage of our BBS upgrades equally.

However we have produced 2 different sets of instructions for how to apply this upgrade, which is partly because we already made some changes and improvements in BBS V1.00 about upgrading, that Evo 2 owners have already, and partly because just like the Nanocom One, we found that the most accessible upgrade path on the EVO 1's had also been broken by a bug. Gees we don't ever seem to cop a break with this Nanocom stuff and i guess those doubters that expected us to perform instant miricles with it are now seeing just what we have had to sort out and gaining some appreciation of why it has taken us so long.

In any event, we have produced a fairly easy fix, althought this does require an extra one time step, as well as guidance to use a slightly more awkward way to put the EVO 1 unit into the relevent upgrade mode.
So you do need to select the right instructions.

Thankfully once on any BBS software version, upgrading is then much simpler and straight forward.

The upgrade process does take a litte while as it is an all in one process that erases and completly replaces the firmware in the Kernel (firmware processor) Graphics and OBD processors as well as the contents of the 2 flash drives. But as you see it is now a very refined and smooth process that keeps you informed of progress.

As a result of this all in one process, it will also obsolete the previous save and restore function too, as re installing the upgrade will also fix any flash file corruptions anyway.

The overwrite target config option allows for the retention of customer configuration files that contain customizable settings such as start up options, units, background selections and unlock licence codes, or complete return to factory defaults.

I am sure that everyone can now see just how hard my team, which now includes Mattia, the origional Nanocom Developer, have been working on this, some of the difficulties we have faced and possibly even understand that over the last several months, since we took on the Nanocom, we have also been reworking the Evo 2 hardware, developing nanocom one upgrade possibilities, renovating the new premises, handling our own business activities and products, as well as more recently suffering major power outages on a daily basis, that we have not exactly been lazy or slow.

As stated before, this is not just an upgrade, it's a whole new start to a very bright future for all Nanocom owners.

    Big Thank you to BBS,

Cheers for the upgrade Colin, just upgraded my evo (one of the originals pre BBS). No problems encountered at all as the how to guides were spot on in explaining the process. Here is a copy of the write up I did on another forum:

Just updated my pre BBS nanocom evolution with the new BBS software upgrade.

The software is available in the restricted section on the nanocom website. Also download the Before and Later how to guides as well. The whole process took about 10mins to do and the procedure was well documented showing each step clearly. You will need an external 12v power supply and a usb lead to connect the evo to the computer. The first stage, Step 1 of the upgrade involves replacing a file in the NC_firmware drive which is corrupted. This is just a drag and replace exercise which takes seconds to do. Next comes Step 2 of the upgrade itself which involves powering the nanocom and then connecting the usb lead. You need to go through the menus to get to Kernel upgrade but again it is all well explained in the how to guide.

When the unit is powered up go into the nanocom menu

    Then select Setup

Scroll across until you see Kernel Upgrade

Then click on Kernel Upgrade and you will get this screen. I unplugged the usb from the computer then reconnected it and waited for the bong from the desktop to tell me it has found the usb device before I clicked on Run Kernel Upgrade so I knew that the nanocom and computer were in sync.

The nanocom goes blank and then you just run the NanocomEvoKernelManager.exe from the downloaded upgrade and it does everything else. Once finished you unplug the nanocom and away you go, simples

The instructions for this procedure are spot on in explaining the process which did instil confidence on my part when doing this and hope this how to will aid your upgrade experience

    Brian.

    Thanks Lorryman100

Although there are a few aspects of the Nanocom One and Evolution that need attention, we felt it was important to start by sorting out the upgrading process first. Once we get this sorted, everything else, like debugging, adding extra coverage and features is then just a matter of formality.

Anyone who read the Evo manual in regard to the original updating process will know what an over involved and complicated process it was, and worst of all, It did not work anyway, at least not by the simplest Menu method of putting the unit into Kernel upgrade mode.

So the need for replacement with a much simplified and well documented process was one of our highest priorities. Of course it proved to be the most troublesome and difficult, laden with problems from beginning to end, but at last we got there in the end and now we have, we can really start thinking about other stuff.

I should add, that once you have any BBS software version on your Evolution, and of course EVO 2 owners already have BBS V1.00 on their units, you then have an additional and much simpler way to put the unit into kernel upgrade mode, as detailed in the "After BBS V1.00" instructions.
Although you can still use the menu selection way you just detailed so nicely.

Ensuring that there is no SD card fitted, simply plug the EVO unit to the PC via the USB cable.
you get 4 icons appear on the EVO screen, one of which puts the unit into Kernel upgrade mode, then simply run the update software on the PC.

    Extra Simples

BTW i note in your screen shot of the Kernel manager software that you elected not to over write the original Config and so on the Status window, you can see where the software read all your config files etc, in order to replace them after updating your Flash file drive contents.

Just upgraded mine. All looks good but don't seem to be getting all the shift change pressure readings.
Will play with it and report back.

Cheers Colin, you weren't kidding about future upgrades being a doddle to do:

As to the config files I have 999 to thank for that bit of info regarding checking that option. I didn't fancy having to start from scratch again entering the unlock codes etc. So I thought it would be prudent to leave my original user settings in place as it works for me and I didn't want to b**ger it up.

I can't yet vouch for the completeness and correctness of all the systems introduced on the Nanocom before BBS's involvement, as these were developed by varied and nefarious means. However these newer systems were added as a direct result of using our existing source code, experience and understanding.

And as we self developed the deepest possible coverage of these systems many long years ago and have supplied them to the busiest of independents, doing anything and everything a dealer would on every model year and variant, they were long since totally debugged.

It's possible of course that something could get messed up in conversion, especially since the Text on the screens has to be entered manually, and broken down into smaller selections that fit on the nanocom screen, but only very small things that are simple to fix when found.

To be fair, we have not reviewed and checked everything yet, as previously stated, we needed to concentrate what limited time our other now publicized activities and problems have allowed us, on sorting a simple and quick, and most of all working delivery method first, and at least getting these missing system added, which we have. So now we got that sorted we can start to look at polishing the rest of this great system up to the renowned high BBS standards

And now we have finally completed the near six months renovation of our massive and now shiny new place, i am sure developments will be much faster.

If you think some features or values got missed in these newly introduced vehicle systems, we would be happy to hear about that, and of course unlike any of our other equipment the Nanocom is supported directly by E-Mail. The best way to know for sure is to look at our own Rovacom / Faultmate systems help pages for the vehicle systems in question, which are all proudly provided on line. As unlike others we have nothing to hide about our systems exact coverage and capability

To help make finding these easier, we created per model coverage documents in PDF which are available in the Coverage Lists section of the downloads page off our web sites home page.

Here is the one for the Disco II
    http://www.blackbox-solutions.com/do...scovery_II.pdf

As you see, this lists all possible systems fitted to all years and variants of the model, and most importantly has a link to the help page for each embedded in it.

If you click on the one for the Autobox, it will show you this page
    https://www.blackbox-solutions.com/shop/help/SM030.html

This access to our own systems help pages, of course has another benefit in being usable to help nanocom owners understand more about the values and settings provided by their systems.

For example, although i just noted a problem with the pin outs section, otherwise this BBS help page for the TD5 EMS provides vast amounts of very detailed information.

Just when you thought it could not be made any easier

As well as the Kernel upgrade mode, we also left in the access possibility to the two flash drives, as although our new simplified all in one upgrade makes direct access to these drives un required and obsolete, and frankly it was always a very bad idea, as under windows, files can be written to these drives in a form so fragmented the nanocom would not be able to read them properly, and it is much more likely someone with direct access would get into trouble rather than fix anything.
Anyway we left them in just in case and have made access code protected as a sensible mid way solution.

The final diagnostic button just enters the usual diagnostic menu for checking stuff, although please note that no diagnostics can be done when entering the diagnostic menu this way and even some OBD port tests will fail as you need a 12V supply which the USB does not provide.

When upgrading, we thought to provide the user with the option of replacing the config files, as opposed to automatically keeping them, in the unlikely event of a corruption to one of those.
