Being a new vehicle you _shouldn't_ need to be reading / clearing codes.

Having said that, the Evo does give real-time display of many engine parameters that you can't get without adding gauges. Most important is the coolant temp being reported to the ECU.

Being able to decipher fault codes does save a lot of expensive guesswork if you do have issues when remote to a dealer.

You don't need a PC to run an Evo apart from the occasional firmware upgrade (which generally isn't time critical)

There is only one type of Nanocom available new, the Evo II, as per the BBS website. For opinions on using the Evo, AULRO is an excellent resource of folks who will give you their experiences, warts and all.

Sorry to be a bit late replying to your post requesting help and guidance Lindsay, It's been a very hectic last week of the year for us and visiting relatives have restricted what free time i have.

We have of course already been performing some basic testing of all our equipment on the 2012 Defender, and although basically the same as the previous year, there are some odd differences that we have still to get to the very bottom of and we may well need to make some accommodation for it within our software.

At present therefore, it might be better to wait a short while anyway.
However once coverage and compatibility is confirmed, i would advise that you get a system for it

In my opinion, if you drive a Defender you 1, need to be mechanically inclined and 2, need to enrol for Roadside assistance and/or in the case of a TD5/Puma buy a Nanocom.

Just today I was fitting an Aux fuel tank & needed to find a 12v IGN wire under the seat to excite a relay for the transfer pump in doing so inadvertently put the multimeter on a wire which caused a fault. The thermo fan began to run constantly when engine was running. Bring out the Nanocom & found I had caused a Fault "Turbocharger Wastegate Short Circuit ", Fault Cleared & all OK.

As far as Im concerned the Nanocom is an invaluable tool & worth every cent.
