How do I upgrade the kernel on Nanocom evo?

I connect to my Nanocom Evo to my pc, and instantly it powers up and gives me 4 options,
Kernal - firmware ( which when pressed has a box to enter numbers) Graphics - Nanocom diagnostic.

It's supposed to be easy as hooking up Nanocom and replacing files .
But I can not get into the nanocom file folders!!!!!!
It's supposed to display on the PC screen and show the folders when the usb is plugged to the computer and Nanocom.

If press kernel on the screen and all I get is bootloader.
It's supposed to be a simple process, but it ain't playing nicely with me.

I'm having a similar problem, except that nothing shows up on my pc when I try start the copy process - I asked nanocom and they said (from the manual)

"Nanocom can also power via the MINI USB connector, but when used in this way you cannot use the Nanocom for diagnostic functions as you will not have access to the menus. When the unit is powered by the USB with an SD card it can work only as external memory device for the PC, or without the SD card to perform Firmware upgrades."

Therefore your point about it killing off the EVO when connected with an SD card is incorrect and the unit is functioning as it was designed.

If the PC/Laptop is not showing the SD card an external device and you believe the Nanocom Evolution to be faulty in this respect please advise and I will have an RMA issued to you for the unit to be returned for further investigation. I would however suggest obtaining the assistance of a qualified PC engineer locally to check for possible issues before taking the step of sending the unit back as if there is no issue found then a fee would be payable.

Don't know if this helps, but I'm about to get my geek mate to double check my modus operandi, then I think my unit is on it's way back to Cyprus

I just got email from Cyprus.
I believe the problem I am having is that I am using the mini USB connection to PC.
From the email I got I was told to power up and thren connect the usb.
So now it seems an external power source must be used to power up, then connect usb.
So tomorow I will power up from vehicle a then connect mini usb to a laptop,.

here is the email I recieved from support.(which I might say is very prompt from support at BBS )

I am not sure what is happening with your unit in regards the calculator
screen showing as having just tested one with the same Firmware as yours
should have it does not do that here when the Kernal button is pressed.

Can you please follow these steps and note that you will not see any
connection on the laptop/computer only on the Nanocom unit and then the
    upgrade box.

Open the Firmware updater box on the screen and it will say Device not
    connected.

Ensure there is no SD card in the unit and then connect the USB lead to
the Nanocom Evo and to the USB port on the laptop/PC

Then from the 4 icons press the kernal button and watch the Firmware
update program should change to Device connected after a few seconds.

Once it says connected then click the Upgrade button.

If you are unable to perform these functions then we will have no option
other than to bring the unit back here to be looked at.

    Kind Regards

I don't read it that way ie connect to pc, not vehicle as external power source, but happy to be proved wrong

Open firmware updater program on PC (will say that nanocom is not connected/detected)

Remove SD cards from nanocom (if present)

Connect Nanocom to PC via USB

Put Nanocom into Kernel mode. Firmware updater program on PC should show established connection

    Run updater on PC.

Don't touch until it says it's finished.

It is not as simple as that , this is what I get when I connect the usb to computer.

2nd pic is what I get when kernel is selected, also on firmware and graphics, pressing nanocom diags takes me through the normal functions and I can access kernel updater from their, selecting kernel updater gos to a black screen and nothing else happens.

    Black screen is GOOD.

This means it is in Kernel update mode.

Strange that it doesn't work from the kernel button though?

Is this a difference between evo1 and evo2?

As the OBDII cable is not long enough to reach from the shed to the PC in my house, how are normal non-laptop people expected to do this?
Is there a 240v transformer that can be purchased for this purpose?

I have been in constant contact with support, very fast responses.
It does not need an external power source, you simply us the mini USB direct to your computer. (I miss read one of their responses.)
It gets its power from there.
We can't work out why mine is doing this. They have suggested i try a hardware upgrade and see if it resolves.
They have never seen this error I'm having.
other wise I will have to return it to them to find out the glitch.
    so will keep you posted.
