Genesis, the inevitable future of diagnostic capability.

It is probably not the done thing for any vendor to point to something they have announced on the verandah.

I hope the Mods will excuse me in this case, but this is something really rather special that will ultimately change everything and worthy of such IMHO.

Imagine that you could just log onto a web site with a user name and password, just like you do with this forum, but instead of reading posts you could then access and read the fault codes from all the systems in your own vehicle, clear them, change it's settings, maybe even update the software in it's various ECU's. Maybe you just want to have your preferred mechanic do the work without having to drive miles to get to him.

That may sound very futuristic to you, but it is actually something we have spent no less than three years making an absolute and current reality.

We have provided a demonstration of this technology which anyone and everyone can try out themselves by dropping me a PM for the user name and password for the demo.

Sounds like quite a step forward but probably just the lead up to having all that capability built into the vehicle with satellite communication direct to the internet so that it can be utilised in the remote locations around the world. With what you describe still needing be plugged into a computer with internet connection, it wouldn't be much good in the middle of outback Australia.

BTW, first time I viewed your post it had a display picture, which now seems to have disappeared.

All very doable. Satellite coms and remote control have been de rigeur for heavy machinery now for years - road trains getting remotely remapped when they hit the WA border, and Caterpillar service guys turning up in the bush to tell you there's something wrong with your excavator... Remote kill switches for stolen vehicles even.

But that's more useful for fleet management... Less so maybe for private users? Unless its supported by dealers or other service centres on some sort of subscription basis?

I saw a demo of this a while ago and it is way impressive... No idea if it is the same demo Colin is taking about here.

I love technology when it is being used for good

Maybe those of us with pre-CAN-bus Landies will get a look-in one day?

    Cheers, Paul.

I think you mean this picture Roger

It's on the post i made in the Verandah section.

A couple of weeks ago i made a demo video of enabling the 4x4 info on my Discovery 3 using an Ipad with its safari browser, which is what Paul saw and it is impressive enough.

But this is even more so as it is a real live 24 hour Demonstration we have set up, whereby we have physically connected a real instrument pack here in Cyprus, via it's CAN bus diagnostics connection, our VCI2 lead, and a Laptop Computer running the genesis client application to the Genesis web site. The Instrument pack has it's front glass removed to reduce reflections and make it show up better on the Web camera we have placed in front of it, and this is also connected via the same Laptop to the Internet. The feed from the Web camera is then embedded in the Genesis demo html web page as you see above.

Note that only one person can be logged in at a time which is why i am only giving the Log in details by PM rather than just post them up, and i thank those of you who have PM'd me already to give this a try. I have already sent the details to you.

In the demonstration, when you press the various buttons on the web page the appropriate warning lamp can be turned on or off toggle fashion. The Gauges can be set to anywhere from 0 to 100% by entering the desired value numerically, and the message center can be set to display any pre fixed message by entering its number and there are about 100.

The result of pressing a button is actually near instant, although the web cam gives about 3 seconds delay before you see it happen in the video image.

It would be interesting to hear if you chaps have a longer delay.

We chose these output functions on the Instrument pack for this demo as the instrument pack is the most physically recognized system on the vehicle and it give the easiest visual result, but obviously Genesis can be used to do anything you could do with a direct connection.

It is quite a step forward, but i do not think that Manufacturers want to have anyone but themselves have any kind of diagnostic capability.
Our little FCR has but a 2 x 16 character display and 3 buttons, it does not cost much, but it reads and clears all possible fault codes from every single system in the vehicle. The manufacturers could have included that capability in the Instrument pack as easily as a trip computer if they wanted to and at no real extra cost to them.

As you say Roger, there are cases and places where an Internet only based diagnostic system would be of no use due to not having an internet connection. But then the number of places in the world where this would be the case is rapidly declining and as long as the cost is proportional many would accept this limitation.

It is also why i do not imagine to introduce this system as a replacement for our existing CAN BUS equipment range, but more to enhance our CAN BUS products existing capabilities.

For example those owning an FCR can use this to read and clear the faults on their vehicle, even in the middle of the outback. However Genesis means that without buying any additional hardware from us, when the do have an internet connection, they now have the possibility to use Genesis to reset their service reminder etc.
