    New ECU install

I have a 99 Defender TD5 with the MSB ecu. I want to have cruise control and the ability to change the fuel map etc. So I brought a NNN00120 ecu off ebay from a seller who seems reputable and said the ECU was new but not in original packaging.

I received the ECU went to my mechanic and got him to fit the ECU but he said that the ECU had an issue where he couldnt get it to communicate i.e. the ECU was stuffed.

Fast Forward a few months I talked to the seller about it and convinced them to send another ECU out. In the mean time I have got a Nannocom so I was thinking that I will install the new ECU myself.

Last night I gave it a crack, I connected the Nanocom and wrote down the injector codes i.e. it can talk with the MSB ECU. Then I connect the new ECU and then power up the Nannocom and it has the error Cannont Communicate with the ECU.

I did notice that there was a little oil in the harness but the current ECU works so I discounted that as the issue.

So what issues could this be?

Is there an incompatibility between the early TD5's and the NNN000120 ECU?

Am I following the right process?
    i.e.
    1. Check Injector codes on old ECU
    2. Disconnect old ECU
    3. Connect New ECU
    4. Set Injector codes
    5. Check Clutch switch setting
    6. Check accelerator setting
    7. Dance happy dance.....
I was thinking that maybe it would be possible to connect the new ECU to another Defender and see if it works, thereby isolating the problem to soemthing in the Defender.

    Thanks in advance.

Nanocoms, especially the original type, have issues "talking" to the ECU,usually its a matter of perservering.Make sure ignition is in the run position.

    From the Manual

    HOW TO REPLACE THE ECU
    1) Read the injectors codes directly from the injector or if it is possible from the old ECU by means of
    the READ SETTING function
    2) Verify if the accelerator type is 2 or 3 track
    3) Install the new or used ECU
    4) Read the injectors codes from the ECU by means of the READ SETTING function, modify them, set
the accelerator type and write these new data with WRITE SETTING function.
    5) Perform the SECURITY CODE LEARN to synchronize the alarm with the new ECU
    6) Write the appropriate map with the WRITE MAP function. You can generate the correct map file
with the NANOCOM MAP WIZARD application included. The maps are grouped according to this
information: vehicle type, ecu PART NUMBER and world region

Thanks very much for that, is that from the Nannocom manual or the workshop manual?

    Strictly speaking, neither.

Each Nanocom module has pdf documentation which can be download from: :: Download - Nanocom ::

The ECU replacement procedure is taken from the TD5 ECU module documentation:
    http://web.nanocom.it/download/TD5%2...20FUNCTION.pdf

Huzzah, new ECU installed and the engine starts using the aforementioned procedure. The one thing I cant figure out is how to do the Nanocom Map Wizard.

Is this installed in the nanocom?
    Is it some other software?

    Can someone help?

    Have a look here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/1...u-numbers.html

AFAIK there's only 2 map choices for a EU2 Defender on a NNN000120, none of which is ROW. Stand to be corrected though.
