    Faultmate Hawkeye etc

How much use are they really for someone like me who is not a bad basic mechanic, but no expert on electronics or codes etc when out in the bush and no access to the Internet?

I have had a few fault codes from time to time, so far I have been lucky enough that turning the car off, locking and then unlocking it has cleared them, I haven't yet had to resort to taking the battery terminal connectors off and shorting them, but I believe that also clears a lot of error codes.

So for somone like me if I had an error I couldn't clear this way in the bush what more could I do with one of these reader/clearers? And for someone like me is one better than the other?

I overcame a sticky primary turbo actuator that caused very restricted performance 200 kms from the nearest dealer by clearing the ecm fault codes, albeit a number of times before having total success by clearing them with the engine running then revving the engine immediately. I concluded the condition from the engine's behaviour in conjunction with the codes so overcome by more than simply clearing the codes, but if you have a tool then perhaps someone else can help you even if you don't have sufficient knowledge.

PS The dealer later agreed with my diagnosis from the codes.

There is a Hawkeye second hand for sale on eBay at the moment in Queensland that so far looks to be going pretty cheap, time will tell on the final price.

The good thing with a Hawkeye is you can buy and load numerous software for different LR models on the same unit.

Don't buy a Hawkeye here in Aus new the local shops are rip offs. You can buy them overseas on the Internet new for a lot less.

    cheers,
    Terry

Thanks for that, it says it is for a D4, I know hey can be programmed for various vehicles, but some are locked to one with a code, if you bought one second hand would you have to get a new code from the manufacturer to change vehicle?

BTW, to the Mods who moved this, I deliberately put this in the D3 forum because I wanted to hear from D3 people about this specifically for the D3.

I like the fact that you can get live data from them. When I changed my gearbox oil I could plug hawkeye in and get a gearbox oil temp reading. These are what I use mine for, same as I did with nanocom on my D2. I am the same as yourself in regards to the mechanical / electrical side of things but believe that if I do have a fault come up and can get an idea of the problem then I can at least look for something that may be on its way out instead of clearing them and thinking great no more fault and then finding a worse issue later.
It could be the wrong way to view it but that's just my simple mind at work. I got my hawkeye new off eBay for $400 to my door.Came from UK

    Cheers Ean

One of the D3,D4,RRS mods would have moved it, but basically if you don't post to the most relevant forum your post will be moved there anyway.

There was a thread covering similar ground posted a couple of days ago:

I would check with him if it is for a D4 or 3 as some of the other parts he has for sale are for a D3.

Not sure however if a D4 has the same plug as a D3 so that could be a problem if it is a actual D4 version. Mind you the different cables and plugs can also be bought.

I don't believe Hawkeyes are locked to one model or just one vehicle as some other diagnostic tools are, in fact many small LR workshops use a Hawkeye as their diagnostic / fault clearing tool.

Hawkeye show live many of the vehicles various parts working when the car is running including injectors etc.

    cheers,
    Terry
