Nanocom Evo 1 - Cracked Touchscreen

Has anyone experienced a cracked screen on their Nanocom Evo 1?

A few days ago I applied normal finger pressure to switch the Nano on and the screen sent out multiple radial cracks in all directions from the point where I had touched it.
It still switched on and some functions seem to work but it soon locks up when switching to certain functions.

Does anyone know if the screen is replacable or am I needing to upgrade to an Evo 2?

I've emailed 'BBS Guy' (Colin) a few days ago but haven't received any reply yet.

Not experienced a Nanocom Evo 1 specfically, but I used to have my own business doing all sorts of electronic and screen repairs back in the UK, and unless BBS had a bespoke screen designed for the Evo 1 (which is highly unlikely), it will be a generic screen available from a number of outlets. Problem is you don't know what it is until you dismantle it.

I would suggest that you sell it as is, cut your losses and buy a new one as the price of parts & labour would most likely outweigh the cost of a new Evo 2

They usually take a while to reply to emails.

A few people have cracked screens on evo's, they are replaceable so I can't see why the original should be any different unless they cannot get the screen anymore.

It seems like the screen is not up to the job in that case. I could understand a screen cracking if the unit was dropped or something but b but, as stated, Mine cracked under normal usage.

After having the Evo for just on two years I was just getting around to using it a bit more (Inst. Mode) and starting to get more familiar with the multitude of functions available.

I think they are a great diagnostic tool but am not keen on forking out another $500 for something that, unless the Evo 2 has an upgraded screen, is possibly going to let me down again.

Do you have any idea how the other screens that you mentioned cracked ?

    Hiya Xtreme

Sorry not to have got back to your e-mail, it seems you e-mailed me personally via the AULRO forum rather than use any of the Regular BBS or Nanocom support E-mail addresses, through which my staff would have been able to assist you almost immediately. Sadly i have been a bit busy of late and so have got behind on Reading / Replying to my e-mails.

I see you have just resent this to a BBS e-mail address and so one of my staff will reply with details, an RMA number and costs etc.

The LCD and Touch screen are supplied as a unique assembly to us, but The screen thickness is the same as most touch screen panels of this type and size.

While over the last year or two we have had a number of people who have cracked their touch screens, the percentage is miniscule, with it currently occurring only once in every month or two.

However, until now, we have never had a single report that this has ever happened under normal usage.

Most cases are where the unit has been dropped onto something that has hit the Screen, had something dropped onto it hitting the screen and even having been sat on while on the seat or in a pocket accounts for quite a few.

However, there are some cases where the user has simply pressed to Hard, and we are aware of a human nature type cause for this.

The Nanocom can be turned on by touching the screen. However to prevent accidentally turning the unit on, there is delay of about 5 seconds.

If the user does not appreciate that this delay exists, they can interpret the lack of the unit instantly powering up as being due to their not pressing hard enough. This can result in them pressing ever harder with the obvious possible result that they may press so hard that the screen cracks.

This is compounded by the fact that, if during this delay, the pressure is released sufficiently that the touch is no longer recognized, the delay re starts.

Of course this has been highlighted in the User guide.

Thanks for being honest about the cause mfc.

To fix it we charge only about an hours labor plus the screen assembly costs.
