Question Defender Puma and ODBII port display?

    Hi Guys,

what im hoping I can get clarification on is if the ODBII port on the new Defenders (the puma) can give live readout of data?

    looking at something like this:
Monitor your car's performance with the Torque app for Android | The Car Tech blog - CNET Reviews

paired with an Android tablet to give me the details on a few things while im driving, I cant find anything on the net from people about this, only that apparently it doesn't work with TD5's as the protocol is wrong?

can anyone confirm before I go buying one of these adapters and buying the app?

if it wont work, what are other peoples suggestions on getting these kind of details out of my engine? things like EGT, water temp (actual temp) mpg/ltrs/100km and other useful things?

im hard mounting a 7" android tablet soon which will have my music and mapping run on it and having this data on there available as well would be super handy.

    cheers in advance

Yes, I have a 2008 Puma and the Torque app works well.

You will need a scan thingy to plug into the ODBII port on the vehicle, this then provides the data real time to the Torque app. I use a ODBLink MX scan tool www.scantool.net which I pair with my Samsung Galaxy S2 via bluetooth.

This is one of my displays from Torque, this was not connected so no data is displayed.

If you are after yet another device, why not try one of these? UltraGauge OBDII Scan tool & Information Center

I find it quite handy, but I have not yet got around to hard fixing any other device that could display the same information.

I have both the UltraGauge and and OBD2 bluetooth module which talks to my phone, and I prefer the UltraGauge.

Once you get the UltraGauge setup how you like it (and if you are anything like me that can take quite a while ) it's set and forget. For a lot of people it's plug and play, with the default screens giving a good selection of stats. The unit is small enough not to be obvious, and simple enough looking not to be a target like a locked in tablet might be.

I didn't like running monitoring and navigation at the same time on the one device, as I found it too much mucking about to switch between the two. Tablet might be better though, assuming you could run them side by side.

That unit you are looking at is pretty pricey! You can find one that likely does the same thing for around $10 - $15 shipped off fleaBay

Make sure the one you get supports all of these protocols http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBD2#OB...gnal_protocols so you can swap it in to any other car without issues
