    Nanocom bad News ?

    G,day All,

The Nanocom finally arrived. Read the instructions. It doesn't work. I am very very disappointed. More than $500.00 for something that does not work. Heres what the tech support man said in his email. They should have told me I need to be a computer expert to use this thing !

" Im glad you've managed to register on the Nanocom website, but im sorry
for the trouble with the unit.
The way to resolve the corrupt file problem is to go to the "Download Area
Reserved" follow "Instructions for Downloading and Extracting the Firmware
    update file.pdf"
Please ensure you overwrite the target config file and reenter unlock codes"

I dont know about this overwriting stuff. Any ideas anyone !

    cheers

    Just do it
Follow the instructions and you should be fine if it doesn't work you have nothing to loose.
I understand you are anxious but it will work out OK I have had similar issues.

    Im in the same boat.
Parting with my hard earned $$490,& counting down the days till it arrived.
mine was dodgy straight out the box.
Freezing at the code unlock screen & totally non respondent.
I literally felt ill, re-installing firmware as instructed, tried several times to get working
BBS claim this is a first (screen freezing at this point)
eventually had to send back, which they have not yet received.
Im not running down BBS but this is fact, and im very anxious.
They have my money & I have nothing

Nanocom ..the brand new one that doesn't work.

    G'day All,

Thanks to the helpers. I did the "Hardware method" to fix with the jumper etc.

Now the screen is saying "SD card error-Reboot system"

    Any ideas?

    cheers

You shouldn't run updates with any memory cards installed from memory.

Don't stress, Colin at BBS is very reliable I've found, and lurks here so should pop up hopefully.

Try rebooting without the card installed.

I have a friend in Darwin, who while not Land Rover savvy is extremely computer literate and could help out if required.

    nanacom busted

Thanks clubagreenie. I do not have an sd card installed. This thing is brand new. I now have the four (4) icons on the screen. When I select Nanacom Diagnostic it comes up with a "NC_firmware disc not found" then SD Card error..Reboot system."

How do I reboot the thing ?

    cheers

Only reboot option is to remove power and wait about 30 sec and then restart.

I'd try another update. I needed 4 attempts to get it going after the last update, initially with the jumper removed, then another, then 2 with the jumper back in. With similar symptoms, except mine was related to some sort of display thingy.

    Hiya All

    LandyDandy

Clubagreenie is quite correct in that you really should not stress.
Despite your current concerns, quite uniquely, as the owner of BBS i make myself readily availiable right here on this public forum and am more than happy to help in any situation

I fully understand your initial dissapointment along with Rover V8's and that not knowing us (BBS) and perhaps being concerned as to our integrity is why i immediately offered you a full refund and had an RMA sent to you, so you know you always have this option and no matter what you will certainly not be messed around or be treated dishonestly by us.

It is of course really not good for you or us that your very first experience should be problematic, with the Unit going corrupt even before you get to use it, and i understand that this will negatively impact your confidence in the unit and BBS which is that last thing we would wish for. However despite our best efforts in pre testing units pre dispatch and wishes these things do happen and although no consolation to those it happens to, given the quantity of these units we ship each day, this is actually a fairly rare occurrance.

So, as unfortunate as it may be that this happens and that it is beyond our control and any pre dispatch checks we could do, we can at least certainly control what we as a company actually do about it when it happens.

As such, although you may not know or appreciate this, but we have recognized that this corruption of the units firmware can sometimes happen and so have worked very hard to address this by providing owners with very easy to use software that is used to not only update the software itself with later update releases, that any owner should regard using as a normal part of ownership and maintainence, but does so in a way that automatically re installs everything and even has the additional option of replacing all configuration files. Ie resetting the unit back to how it was when you got it.

We do not expect owners to be computer experts by any means, but we also do not think it unreasonable for us to expect that anyone buying equipment to perform DIY repairs to their vehicles to not be savvy enough to use our upgrade software, althouggh we do appreciate that having to do this before you even get to use the unit makes for a rather steep introduction.

I did the "Hardware method" to fix with the jumper etc.
This quote seems to suggest that you have indeed now figured out just what lengths we have gone to, including our secondary back up feature and how easy it really is to do

As such i would expect that you would understand and appriate my explaining exactly what has happened to cause you these problems.

The Nanocom has a number of memories, the largest being the main Fimware which is FAT based. We quickly learned that this could easiliy be corrupted, especially as FAT uses a FAT table. To prevent corruption we now write lock the entire Firmware memory, however there are some times when we have to unlock this to change the contents, one being when you store your unlock codes. At this point, no matter how small, corruption is unfortunately possible and is what seems to have happened here.

To answer the SD card error, it is pretty much like when the OS on a PC is non bootable due to corruption etc, it will then look for a bootable Floppy disk and then complain when a floppy disk is not present.

In this case with the firmware memory not being as it should be, it is looking for a restore image on the SD card.

That you are now getting your four icons instead of one seems to indicate that although things are improving, your firmware is is still not reprogrammed correctly and you should try doing the update again.

If you still cannot get this working, we would of course happily get the unit back and get to the bottom of it.

    Unhappy

being concerned as to our integrity is why i immediately offered you a full refund
Colin, refund was never offered to me at all from BBS.
I did ask BBS for another unit to be shipped immediately, as from my view I had parted with my money, waited 10 days, then the unit I received had a problem that was not solvable with firmware & had to be returned.
I was told "under no circumstances" would a replacement be sent until the first unit was returned.
I ordered & paid on the 2/7/13 so by the time I do get a working unit it will be well over a month.....
Received unit thursday 11/7 & sent back Monday 15/11
I do want a working unit but it was needed when I undone the package.
Thank-you for your acknowledgment and I can only hope this is sorted quickly..

    Nanocom....No Com it is.

    G'day All,

Well I have tried the download many times and followed the available instructions to try make this device work but to no avail. I thank everybody who has tried to assist also. I will take Colin up on his generous offer to give me a full refund, and send the thing back to Cyprus. I dont want to muck around having it repaired. I have also used DHL Couriers before and while they offer excellent service, I could buy a new one for the freight back and forth.

    cheers all

    Landy
