I've been curious about the X431 since I came across mentions of it on the web early in 2013. I had a moment of madness and purchased one late last week, and after a missed delivery yesterday the DHL driver placed the package in my hands about an hour ago.
I haven't had a chance to hook it up to a vehicle as yet but have set up my user account, and checked out the vehicle support options.
The X431 works on the basis of a 12 month license for vehicle support, and you can buy coverage in a couple of ways. A European makers pack covering 43 manufacturers is $599USD, while a license for a specific manufacturer costs $66USD. Note that this is "per manufacturer", not "per vehicle", nor "per VIN", so you get coverage of everything listed in the supported model list.
It looks like the X431 coverage is a few versions behind their professional versions. The latest version listed for purchase for LandRover v31.52 whereas the pro update is v31.61.
The v31.50 coverage includes Discovery 1996 -> 2011MY's, Freelander 1997-2011MY, Defender pre-2007 (Td5, GEMS NAS, MS4) -> 2011MY, Range Rover 1995 -> 2011MY, Range Rover Sport 2005 -> 2011MY.
31.51 added a range of functions to the post 2005 models.
31.52 added support for 2012-2013 Evoque, Range Rover 2013
Once I get a chance to hook up to the D2 I'll add some hands on impressions.
The X431 iDiag is available in a few different packages - I purchased the iOS version, but there is a Android package with the same setup, as well as versions that include case for iPad, iPad Mini, or a Samsung Tablet. These all seem to be the roughly the same price ($120-$130 shipped).
This is the iOS package. The long object is a hard case that holds the bluetooth OBD adapter and a short OBD II extender cable.
First impressions are that the hardware is well made and more solid feeling than I would have expected.
cheers

Paul, I have to say that looks very interesting. I will be very keen to see how you get on with this.
Looking at the website, the LR software version is up to 31.61, to add extra functions for D4 and Evoque.
[EDIT] Ignore that, you've already mentioned that version.
IMPORTANT: This post reflects my experiences with an old version of the X431 app (version 1.41). The current version 2.2 app appears to be a major upgrade, so I don't feel the comments accurately reflect the current state of the product. I'll update the iOS app, which I hope will allow me to update the adapter firmware, and post up another review.
I've had a bit of a play and the X431 is not too bad.
The first thing that jumps out is that you need an internet connection to use it. The software logs into the Launch website to verify your current licenses and throws a "cannot connect to the internet" error if you turn on "airplane mode".
The other fiddle is that you seem to need to go into the settings menu and click on the interface registration tab before you try to access a software module for the first time in a session. If you don't do this you get a "you need to download diagnostic software" error, even if you have previously done so.
I've also found the Automatic Detect doesn't work on my D2 - I have to go to the manual selection option and pick Discovery 2.
The options you get presented with in the D2 menu are:
- Engine
- Autobox
- ABS (SLABS)
- SRS
- Petrol Cruise Control (Neither the Nanocom or Hawkeye give you access to this module. )
- ACE
- Vehicle Configuration
- BCU & Transmission
- Gauges
- Heated Screen
- Lighting
- Power Distribution
- Security ( Reads the EKA code from the ECU)
- Warning and Sounders
- Washer and Wipers
- Windows and Sunroof
All of the options after ACE appear to be data displays for various aspects of the BCU. I haven't dug deep enough to see if you can alter settings but I suspect not.
I haven't been able to connect to the ACE module as yet, but this requires a timed sequence with the Nanocom so it might just be a matter of timing it right.
The TD5 Module gives you the standard read/clear codes, live data, and the ability to program injector codes.
The Auto module allows you to read general data and adaptive pressures, and reset adaptations.
The SLABS Module lets you read/clear codes, read live data, test actuators, and calibrate and configure SLS. I'm not able to see any bleed functionality and I wasn't able to get the ABS pump relay test to work when I tried that. There is definitely enough diagnostic information available here to let owners solve the Three Amgios.
This is the data streams page for the SLABS module with a graph of the Throttle Angle.
SRS module basically lets you read/clear codes. There isn't much more you can do with that ECU.
Unfortunately I don't have any other LR products to hook the X431 up to so can't really give a run down on anything else. If anyone feels sufficiently interested and are inclined to head down to Brunswick I'd be happy to plug in and have a peek at what the modules can do.
It's possibly worth mentioning that the hardware comes with a free download of a generic EOBD2 module, and amongst the Asian vehicles supported are Ford Australia and Holden.
From the perspective of a D2 the $200AUS for the hardware and a single marque unlock it seems pretty reasonable value. It's not even close to a Nanocom in capability for configuring the BCU or map up loading and the data recording ability is fairly clunky. On the other hand, at $200AU it is cheaper to purchase than an ABS Amigo and gives the buyer a substantial step up in diagnostic capability.
cheers

Oppps! I've just noticed that the App I've been testing with is an older version (X431 Euro v1.4.1) that is no longer available on the App Store. I installed this to check out the demo mode when at the start of the year and had assumed this was still the correct version. The current version is X431 iDiag v2.2, so I have to assume this is a significant upgrade.
I'm going to revisit with the current version, but I think it's necessary to discount the views expressed in post above until I have a chance to test it out with the right software.
I tried out the newer X431 iDiag v2.2 software from and it's still displays a lot of the bugs especially in the data display sections. As far as I can tell the app changes don't solve any of the issues with accessing the D2 modules.
I have discovered that you actually use the software without an active internet connection. You do get a log in failure message but once you dismiss this everything appears to work ok, except the add on functions that use online content - social, remote diagnosis, etc.
Out of curiosity I had a look at the version number on another X431 app ( X431 进口车 ) on iTunes which had all the descriptive text in the listing in Chinese, but appeared to be the same program as the one in the English listing. The only difference was that the version number was 2.3 and it had an additional entry in the change log, which I ran thru google translate:
You can only hope that it has made the "problems to perfect"1, the increased data stream playback functions.
2, adjust the iPad and iPhone multi-language adaptation.
3, the previous version of the problems to perfect.
I only downloaded this last night so haven't been able to test, but I can confirm that the user interface displays in English and the app looks identical to the one labeled X431 iDiag.
I'll test this version out in the next day or two, but if you have an X431 I'd recommend getting this version of the app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/x431...23509'mt=8

Paul,, am I reading this right?
you can reset/change auto pressures?
so the box does "learn"?
and torque figures?

It doesn't learn in the sense I'm assuming you mean.
The Auto ECU has a target time for shifts to complete in. As the box operates it adjusts the pressures to ensure the shift completes in the correct time. It is basically an adaptation for wear in the clutch packs. You can read these values from the ECU and reset them.
I'd stress that these are not adaptations to driving style, it is adapting wear. You should only reset the adaptations if components that are effected by wear are replaced.
You can get torque figures but this is based on estimates against a pre-programmed figure rather than actual.

I've had a bit of a play with the "Chinese" v2.3 iOS app linked above and it is a substantial improvement over the "English v2.2" release on iTunes. Not perfect but much better.
Data stream recording and visualisation works for the most part and is pretty impressive. You can display either a screen with a list of sensor values or select specific data streams for display in graphic formats.
As an example, this screen shot shows the throttle pedal voltages:
The supply voltage looks like it's incorrect. Not sure why this is but I suspect it's a software error.
The actuator tests are still hit and miss. The glow plug lamp test works but testing the temp gauge lead to an endless "test in process" error which required a force quit to escape from.
I'm still not able to access the ACE ECU. I'll try to work out how to report bugs as the company claim they will try to resolve these kinds of problems.
At this stage I'd have to say for the D2 it's a useful alternative to the Hawkeye and Nanocom if you are looking for a straight forward tool to read and clear codes and perform basic diagnostics on most of the D2 systems without a huge upfront outlay. The weakness in D2 support is the relative lack of support for programming BCU options, and that still makes the Hawkeye and Nanocom the go to tools if you want relatively comprehensive coverage of all vehicle systems.
Anyway that's about all I can really say at the moment. If anyone is interested in hooking up a D3, or P38a, or later LR to see how it performs, ping me a PM.
cheers
