D3 TDV6 Diagnostics, resetting, forcing outputs and flashing

    Hi,

my wish to get a diagnostics tool for our 2006 Disco 3 TDV6 Auto has just taken on a priority. I have just been quoted $220 plus GST to update the software for the new AMK air suspension compressor that I am about to fit myself. ( for reference, compressor = $1000 delivered to WA from UK) I live in a regional centre and the local 'specialist' has quoted me that price to update the software. I figure that I should put that money towards a diagnostic tool that has capability to update software.

So, several questions, does anyone know for a fact which diagnostic units can do that level of function? And am I able to obtain / download the updated software version for the new AMK air suspension compressor for free?
    thanks.

IIDTool can do it, no problem - IIDTool for Land Rover - GAP Diagnostic . Around 225GBP for the non BT one and 320GBP for the bluetooth one. Others will be able to do it too but I don't use them so I don't know for sure the detail.

I did my AMK before IIDTool could do this software update so I had to get it done by the Dealer. They charged like $60 to do the update while I drank their coffee and watched TV in their nice leather lounge ... $220+GST sounds ... a tad expensive ... unless that includes a well stocked open bar and pole dancers.

thanks for the confirmation Mick, I have just been looking at that one. I'm not clear on what interface is needed to control and read this unit. I dont have an iphone and my android phone is just not quite up to spec according to their guide. I have a laptop but that dependency doesnt suit my long term plans to use such a tool.

As for the cost of $60 to upgrade, I would jump at that, but where I live you have to pay through the nose or develop some independence.

Iidtool uses the centre screen as display and the cruise buttons to navigate and issue commands to the device. I have the older non BT model and have been happy with it but I would say that the BT model is more future proof as it has more memory and some extra features. HTH

And does anyone have any comment on the BlackBox Solutions Faultmate MSV-2, apart from the cost of course.

It sounds like the garage equivalent of the Thermomix

I used my MSV-2 recently to load different software into my D4's TCM. Unfortunately it became obvious that the particular software wasn't the next update level that I thought it would be from the naming conventions of the component modules because the TCM immediately threw an incompatibility fault. I then loaded the software that should have been the same as last loaded by the dealer, which fortunately it was.

Having to use my XP laptop to use the advanced features of the MSV-2 is a little inconvenient but would be a problem if the BBS s/w doesn't run on later operating systems.

Progress, the IIDTool Bluetooth version turned up yesterday, $670 delivered to WA from LRDirect in the UK.
Downloaded the GAP IIDsoftware to my laptop, and did the unlocking and activation. The instructions need a bit of work I might add. Anyway, checked out the air suspension fault codes as I was still getting air suspension faults since I installed the AMK compressor 2 weeks ago, made a note of what they were and proceeded to reflash the suspension ECU. The IIDTool comes pre-loaded with the versions for the Hitachi and the AMK as mentioned above by epic pooh, so its just a matter of picking the one you want and initiating re-flash. I used the micro USB to USB cable to connect to my laptop as my Android smart phone isnt capable of connectivity yet. So it was fine to do it all on the laptop.

So that tool just partially paid for itself, saved me a $240 bill. I'm happy.

Update; used the Wife's Samsung Galaxy, S5 I think, to connect with Bluetooth. What a difference! much better than using the laptop to interface. The phone App was much quicker through the menus and quite a useful menu structure. The User Manual, which is downloadable from the GAP site has a Menu Tree, so I printed that out on A4 and it made it easier to see where I was going in the menu.
Accessed the fault codes list and emailed it to myself, very simple process. Even the Missus was impressed.
