    Nanocom for a Dummy!

What real benefits are obtained from carrying a Nanocom & would it be wise to extensively travel in remote areas in a Disco TD5 without one?

It gives you the ability to read and clear any engine and BCU fault codes that may appear.

It also gives you the ability to write security settings and injector codes (the latter may be useful)

Yeah I bought mine before doing my Simpson trip, mainly cause it can help you diagnose what may be the problem with the disco. It allows you to run tests on main components, clear codes etc

But if you buy one you do have to learn a bit about the car cause the Nanocom doesnt just spit out the answer...you need to know what you are looking for and understand what the main likely failures are.

But in terms of being prepared I think its a valuable part of the tool kit as long as you know how to use it. Also make sure you have a copy of RAVE with you...oh and a laptop to read it...

Yeah sorry about that Shaker....RAVE is very handy. Tells you a lot about how the disco is put together and in a bind could help diagnose and fix something...

Could you please explain what you mean by write security settings and injector codes.
    Also what is a BCU.

Don't worry about all this tec stuff. Get your self a Nanocom- it will save a lot of money.
The draw back is that there is no manual- that makes sense!
You have to learn on your own, bit by bit.
For example; BCU [ body control unit] is a box that tells the system what sort of car you have. Deisel or petrol/manual or auto and so on.
1st lesson- Do not push any button that says 'write'. Whilst learning only hit 'read' buttons.
    Good luck Tony

    Here is my 2 Cents

If you are normally a do it yourself person and have a good understanding of electrical systems and mechanicals, I reckon a Nanocom will save you heaps over the time you own your vehicle.

But, if you cannot, or do not have the tooling / facilities to do your own work, then a Nanocom could cause you all sorts of hassles.

I.E The three Amigos come on. You plug in your Nanocom and it displays errors for Earth, Shuttle Valve, Modulator and wheel sensor.(not uncommon) You get rid of the lights by clearing the faults. But you have not solved the problem.
Can you do the repairs yourself?
Do you know if fixing one of these will rectify one or more of the logged faults?
If you cant, or are not confident, you will have to take it to the Dealer, who will plug in their Testbook and attempt to read the codes (which AFAIK are gone because you cleared them ) The dealer will charge you for the diagnostics regardless, because they will not commence a repair on this sort of thing just because you said so. They will send you on your way and tell you to come back when the fault reapperas. Unless you have great personal relationship with them!!!

Having said that the ability to clear faults could reinstate your Traction Control for long enough to get out of that sticky spot and get repaired.

You will have to evaluate your knowledge, ability and travel plans before you decide if this is worthwhile for you to buy or not. For me, a Nanocom would be a good way down the list for remote travel.

    Cheers
