    Advice needed

I have a 2004 TD5 130 and it has been missing intermitently. Today it lost throttle input several times. Engine dropped back to idle with no throttle input, Would not rev up. I stopped and turned off and started again all returned to normal, check engine light also came on. I have changed the injector harness 60,000klm ago checked looks clean.
I am on the verge of ordering a nanocom. Are these worth the money? I have noticed that there seems to be several different devices to diagnose faults. What is the best, i also own a 2001 Td4 Freelander so something that will talk to both would be good. Where is the best place to get a diagnostic tool from and what is a rough price?
    Thanks Mark

    Hi Mark
Nanocom is the cheapest and works well, but its no good for the baby landy.
Double check your red plug on the ECU for oil contamination, sounds like an "oil in the harness" issue.
Also check the fuel cap is tightened correctly.Unsure about Defenders but us D2 TD5 pilots have a sticker warning to tighten past 3 clicks or the check engine light will come on.
If you have a traytop conversion the original sticker may be gone???

I think you are going to need a diagnostics tool of some sort with this.

Generally oil in the harness wont present itself as a totally dead throttle, more liklely messed up signals to the injectors, resulting in a lack of power.

See if there is anyone local to you with a Nanocom who can read the codes for you.

I had dead throttle issues in mine a few years ago, when I accidentally screwed one of the dash screws through the throttle loom, so as soon as the car got wet, it shorted out.

You could test this by making up a seperate loom using say trailer socket cable through the footwell as a test. This fixed mine so I then swapped out the main bulkhead loom.

I would think the errors will log as driver demand (throttle).

the loss of throttle thing points me at the TPS and its plug. (as youve already made mention of)

the nanocom is worth its weight but I dont know if it does the FL as well.

my advice on the nanocom (and this is only beacause there are several other similar items out there and some people prefer the other systems front ends) is to line up borrowing one from someone and seeing what it does for you.

I second the throttle potentiometer as a likely fault. As Pete says, it should log a 'driver demand' error.

    nanocom options

Thanks for the input guys. Where is the best place to get a nanocom from?
and a rough price would be good. I will check the TPS today and make sure there is nothing obvious.
    Thanks Mark

    G'day Mark.

I got mine thru Stuart (same user name on this forum) from Rovacraft in Vic'.

$499 + $11 postage. He did say they only had a few left at that price and the new stock coming was going up by around 15%.

Send a PM to "Stuart" on the forum and he'll look after you.

Definitley a worthwhile addition to your Td5 toolkit!

Instead of purchasing a Nanocom at this stage, you might want to see what one does and do. Find a member who has one and see if they are interested in a demonstration.

Their all there to give you a hand.

    Td5 missing.

Sounds just like mine did when it gave problems in Newman a couple of years ago. It would tick over all day but not give any power if the throttle was pressed a bit.
Definitely get the throttle potentiometer checked. Nasty thing to get fixed in the bush irrespective of if you've got a diagnostic tool or not!
    Hope it all goes well.
    Alan.
