Thread: Ineos Grenadier, do you reckon it'll take off?

Saw my first up close and personal today. The Accountant our Business uses turned up in one for the bi monthly meeting they have. He’s had it on order for 18 months and took delivery of it just 4 weeks ago.

Was impressed by the whole vehicle inside and out. He loves it and had had Defenders in the past. Driving position is better than the Deefer but it actually still felt like being behind the wheel of one (although the steering wheel is actually in the centre of the driving position unlike the Deefer.

The more I watch these reviews the more I'm convinced that if the grenadier V2 will be an excellent car if the company survives to make it. Most of the niggles are things that can be addressed.

What I'm more worried about is the price and weight of the car. Neither of which are easy fixes.

Yes,LR has spent 70 plus years at it and are still dealing with them....

Ditto here. SWMBO and I saw one up close while on a walk yesterday and was impressed with what we could survey non-invasively in the moment. If V2 addresses some of the few items outstanding, it could be a contender (though a dear one, if price isn't addressed as well).

I remain convinced that if they fix the stuff and do natural refinements it will be a good car. It kind of reminds me of a modern D2 which is not at all a bad thing.

The problem is at the moment that if you order at the current prices most people will be dropping well north of $130k for one. I specced one and left off all the nice stuff I wanted, and just got a barebones Trial master with a bull bar and sliders and I was nudging 140k. No nice colour, leather seats, wheels etc etc. There is just so much competition.. At the moment the people who are getting them delivered and maybe ordering them are still the people who absolutely must have one at any price. Whenever there is a new car there is always a first rush until those orders are filled. Once they are delivered a vehicle has to make actual sense and be competitive.

I just really can't see there being enough people willing to drop that $$$ to have sufficient volume to maintain and build a brand once the early adopters all have one. They are objectively far far too expensive for a utility vehicle.

When I bought the defender it was basic and cheap. It was literally the cheapest 4x4 I could buy. Sure it was barebones but that was OK. The Grenadier on the other hand is charging more than cars with everything that have established reputations and service networks. They are between a lc 300 VX and sahara.. FFS.

Oh well. Will be interesting to watch from the sidelines.

In the ineos FB group.. some guy put up a post of his new ipad mount for the dash, because no one can get carplay to work. I'll admit I loled. I have to mount an ipad to the dash when travelling because carplay came a long time after my car. Or I could spend 140k on a grenadier and still have to stick an ipad to the dash. lololol....

Everyone is waiting for ineos to release a fix, but alas. We're really going to find out how good ineos actually is in the coming year. This is one example, but I'm sure there are many other issues that early adopters are "living with" and patiently waiting for fixes. The question is will Ineos be bothered rolling out fixes to the existing cars, or will they just fix production and move on. While this one might not require changing hardware, I'm sure some will and that's expensive.

My BMW prototype they tried for a while, but eventually they just gave up fixing things and just suggested I buy a new car which by that point new production had all the issues rectified. And once warranty expired there were fields of cars parked up because the fixes were too expensive.

It wouldn't surprise me if in the coming years we see many early adopters just give up waiting for things to be fixed and either buy another or just move on. Again if my BMW experience pans out it will only take a couple of years and the cars will be much more mature.

Personally I like them… and kudos to them having a go.

I do however think the niche and the “Defender likeness” was the driving passion for many early adopters. I also believe that future sales are less likely to be as popular due to pricing and more common alternatives.

After all, a LC or similar ilk, whilst more “rounded” in profile are no less capable of doing what a IG can, have a broader market, more important towards end of ownership / resale and a longer history.

I’d like to see the IG hold its own, will be watching from the sidelines though.

I really did like the idea of them. A defender refresh done properly was the hope. Unfortunately they jacked the prices so fast it put the kybosh on it.

The original defender was one of the cheapest 4x4 on the market. So it didn't really compete with all the big flash ones. Ineos have turned that around and now offer one of the most basic 4x4 for as much or more than any of the most luxurious competitors. And they haven't sorted the bugs, proved them to be reliable, or established a support network.

I don't know how I'd feel about a pipie bucket sloshing sea water out in the back of a 140k car.
