My days doing that are long gone,i have sure done my fair share over the years.I could write a book about what we have come across while travelling.

But i still crawl over our private vehicle before we go away, and if we are not going away,i do it regularly anyway.

Those dual cab utes on order are the 11 and 12 Toyotas i have ordered in the last 17yrs,all but one for work use.

It is truly concerning isn’t it.

Choosing to go somewhere and trust a mechanical steed should, as part of any sensible planning, involve some level of basic knowledge.

I know how you feel about spending considerable time fixing another travellers broken ride because they had no clue how to solve the basics. Ironically most were Nissans or Toyotas.

100% agree too, mechanical sympathy and observation are critical. If something feels different or sounds different it shouldn’t be ignored - took a few years to get this thinking into my wife - now anything that’s not “the norm” is passed on straight away, or she will stop and inspect.

Then of course there’s that sub standard mechanical work people pay for and it isn’t done right - damn that annoys me!

I find people that need a tow but don't have a tow rope, snatch strap etc annoying. Last lot I helped used my wire cutter to cut some barbed wire that had washed into a creek crossing and then went around their front drive shaft. They totally messed up the cutting edges on the tool, but didn't even offer to replace it.

People are helpful out in the countryside, twice when I've had punctures on dirt roads people have stopped to help, in the last case a farmer and his son saw us from his house and drove out to help. Twice I've felt guilty about not stopping to help Land Rovers on the freeway, when I've been on the way to an appointment in rush hour traffic. I think I'll add Grenadiers to my list.

I think I'm up to 14 simpson crossings plus a few others. I do occasionally get asked for driving tips. People are surprised when I say "drive as slow as you can".

All the mechanical failures I've seen out there have been people "sending it". I aim to go just fast enough.

    Yep. Mechanical sympathy is key.

So last trip.. two desert crossings.. not a single back down and try again. There wasn't even a hill where we had to take a runup. Even the toyota people were left shaking their heads ad the defenders ability to stop on sand hills so we could hammer a sign in and then just take off from standstill and resume the climb while everyone else was taking run ups. That car is comically good in the desert. And comically gentle on it'self and the tracks. No wheelspin ever.

This is another reason why I'm sticking with it.

As I commented in my Simpson Desert thread, the 2a 109 diesel showed it was a definitely superior in the desert to the FJ45s we had. Despite being about half the power!

Half the power probably explains its superiority.
