I’ve had several recommendations not just the newer SU’s. Apart from the early expensive stuff like E types, most Jaguar people I’ve spoken to aren’t nearly the rivet counters that Land Rover folk seem to be. They seem happy to discuss any and all mods to most vehicles and provide advise around such things.

A Jag specialist mentioned to me once: "I get guys in here with an extracted motor, 'what will you give me for it?' I say, '$100 - maybe? If you'd left it in the car, let me test it before it was removed - maybe several times that.'

Those motors are(!) heavy. Even lifting the head off them needs an engine jack. Even so, they're hard not to like - that long-stroking note... And the sheer mass combined with the original spec spring-rates is one of the secrets to the 'ride'.

EFI - if done properly - transformed their reliability. As did ditching all 'Lucas' electricals in favour of Bosch.

Well I’m safely home with the Jag - need to think of a name for it now...

A quick 40KM romp home that proved effortless for the engine - I like it a lot already. Not an outright powerhouse but heaps of torque makes it get along real easy.

Tommorrow I’ll go over it with a fine tooth comb. Well at least the petrol tank question has been answered - it’s full so I know it doesn’t leak. The PO filled it when he first got it and found it didn’t work. Will ditch the fuel that’s in it but at least it isn’t rusty!

I pressed the switch to check the fuel pump - no sound, but also the fuel gauge dropped to empty so unless there’s something wrong with the sender (distinct possibility) then I’m thinking the switch may be at fault. I’ll whip it out in the morning and have a play.

Off to the Jag forum now to ask some questions, but I’ll also ask them here too as I go as it seems we have a few clues up members here too. 👍😊

Don`t get me wrong i have driven a couple of these that were fuel injected

Id have one in a heart beat and as a cruiser they excel and i do like the six pot but id be very guilty of a major heart transplant if i ever felt the need to own one

Will be fixing some of the wiring to make it more reliable - mainly relays, etc. Will keep the carbs - I have no issues looking after these and it keeps life simple IMO. Will upgrade the ignition to electronic but that’s about it I think. It will only be doing fine weekend work and club runs, shows etc.

First show is next weekend - the David Calleja Memorial Car Show - David Calleja Memorial Car Show

If anyone’s coming along they can look at it in the flesh. 👍

Ah gotta love jags, on of the big wigs of the old CBA bank had one as a company car. He and his body guard/driver would go out every week on a business trip and on return only the body guard/driver would come back with the Jag on a flatbed. True story.

IIRC the newer electronic version of the SU pump is nearly a direct swap out, old for new. I also recall from one of the Rover forums that one of the new electronic pumps even has an (artificial) tick so it sounds like the original.

Like others, I would love an old Jag.

So found the fuel gauge issue - wire had popped off the back of the sender and once reattached works fine. Also getting 12 volts to the pump but it isn’t working and has a very high resistance compared to the other side - which has been replaced as the wiring look from the pump is quite new by comparison to the rest of the wiring so it shows these pumps are a known issue. Thankfully with 2 of them there’s a nice bit of redundancy built in. Will pull the stuffed one out tomorrow and see if I can coax it back to life for the time being while I get new ones.

Also found 2 ‘spare’ wires behind the tail light where the sender lives - anyone got any ideas - I’ve posted this on the Jag forum too. Looks like they went to another globe at some point but no idea what.
