Still a lot of cash for the vintage, how would they compair to a izuzu powered county with lockers.

you can also go the import route. Approx same vintage, but a lot less Ks on the clock, see below

There's a good summary on their performance in "The off-road 4WD book". The highlights:
Off-road performance wise, right up there, an equivalent defender would have better axle articulation, (but with cross axle diffs front and rear, would you really need it?) otherwise, the G-Wagen outperforms (on paper)
A lot of thought went into them, come with absolutely everything you'd want both off-road and on, user switchable ABS, (also switches off automatically in diff locked mode), additional vacuum reservoir in the braking system so you have vacuum assisted breaking even if your engine stalls etc etc
and finally my favourite
"The doors are well sealed for wading, but this can lead to flotation, lowering traction"
something the defender will never be able to be accused of!!
Seems quite underpowered for on-road, especially the 3L diesel. It makes
83 kW @ 4600 RPM!!! and 191 Nm torque at 2800 RPM.
The book's author still prefers defenders
As I said, they are a rare vehicle in australia too,the one I had a ride in was one of 2 sold in WA that year and was 6 months old,the owner is a G Wagen nutter as much as we are Landy nutters. It impressed the hell out of me!!!
My last 3 trips to Perth Ive spotted at least 3 each trip, and yes I would grab one too!!!!
They have to be coming in as grey imports as they just werent big sellers ANYTIME!!!
