    Because of the bandwidth required to transmit data when very high resolution images are acquired, these images are only acquired in areas of interest - and the southern Indian Ocean has, until recently, not been a high priority area for these.

    Further, a lot of military satellites are almost certainly in orbits and with coverage limited to a small area directly below them.

    Distinguishing between plants is done on colour. It doesn't require any significant resolution in the photos.

    Apparently a Chinese search air craft has spotted wreckage and passed on coordinates to a Chinese ice breaker that is in the area.
