Not to mention the significant human cost, of those lost and those still waiting for them...
I think its great training for the staff involved and certainly I am sure has shown up some shortfalls in some of what we use in tracking on planes. The cost is still the same for most of these, as mentioned, paying wages and so on. There'll be more fuel usage and such but the figures touted by the press will be garbage. Even if they are correct, technically, what should be also published is the difference in cost of the search, vs the the cost of all the wages and maintenance etc that would already be occurring regardless, no search. I'm sure the figure would be much less shocking
I do think its one of the things we should do, and I'm sure its true that many of the costs are coming from already-budgeted money, such as wages, operating costs etc. However, I also think the cost should be properly accounted for and made public. If we think its the right thing to do, then why would we want to hide the cost?

Yes, we couldn't have a government being accountable to the people who elected it by telling those people how their money is being spent and what is being done with it, such as the current unconfirmed action to illegally force an asylum seeker boat back to Indonesia, which resulted in PM Abbott cancelling his trip to Indonesia to avoid embarressing the Indo. President SBY, could we? After all, what a silly idea - governments being accountable to voters? How ridiculous!

How could anyone place a costing on so many lives? If you had a loved one on that flight, would you worry about the costs involved in finding out what really happened?
Having said that, I know we don't live in a "perfect world". However, the costs now of finding out what happened may help prevent the same thing happening in the future.
near enough.
plus theres somethings that get buried and how far back do you go when it comes to recouping costs.
say they sent me to support at learmonth.
do they charge for my acrued hourly rate on task? (so 8 hrs day) or the full 24 hours that Im worth in the field per day? what about the free food I eat, how about the cost of getting me there and the additional money my family gets when Im away.
what about the cost of the additional leave that I get from such a trip and the impact that has on future costings?
how about wear and tear on the gear supporting the equipment thats flying in and handling my expendables as part of my job.
how about the wear and tear + depreciation on my tools
how about the cost and wear on the equipment that I maintain that supports the guys that support the aircraft.
and all of that is the stuff that essentially goes into the overall cost of putting a coffee adicted grease monkey in position to service things like forklifts.
imagine going through that for every aspect of every person in every trade.
then theres the cost of the facilities that we'd be working from and that includes.......

Spare a thought on Mothers Day for Mrs Weeks.
Danica Weeks - widow of Paul Weeks - with sons Jackson, 1, and Lincoln, 3. Photo / 60 Minutes
.
And how was Paul Weeks death any more or less important than the other 56 million peopl that have died in the past 12 months. I'm sure their are others with more and others with less sad stories to tell.
I'm not saying I couldn't car less about peolpe dieing becasue I think it's terrible to loose someone close but the reality is people die everyday, well over a million people everyday as a matter of fact.
I would have liked to see this plane found not so much for closure for the families and close ones to the people that died but to prevent it in the future.
