    Flight on the Dark Side...

Got a confession here:- I've visited the Dark Side, -and it is so much FUN.

Last year I spent my part-time earnings and lashed out on fulfilling a childhood dream... Learnt to fly. Got my Pilot Certificate mid-year and have been flying Jabiru 160's around since then.
The Flying School I went with insists on us having some 'spin awareness' before the PC, and they have a suitable VH -rego'd biplane for that.

Anyway, last week due to circumstances I found myself at Jandakot, near an Aussie company that offers 'adrenalin-type joyrides'... went up in a Robin and indulged in some... 'Unusual Attitudes'... stuff we aren't allowed to (intentionally !) do in LSA class.
    I say, - It was jolly good fun,-What !

My spins are fine, barrels... first was ragged, second better and nailed in on the third and wingovers are just so relaxing.
    - Not bad for a pensioner...

I can now understand why folk fly like that....
After the tiny 'planes, these great fat geriatric lumps virtually fly themselves.

The kids are NOT impressed with their dwindling Inheritance, - and I've only got more Bad News for them!

More Bad news for my wallet.... I've been offered some fun-time in a Decathlon, and it would be bad manners to pass it up...

Will be a welcome challenge, high-wing and tail-dragger. At least landings won't be as boring as they are in the tricycle-Robin...

I have a sneaking suspicion that the young Instructor in question is being a tad devious, trying to tempt me from RA-Aus to the Dark Side, and piquing my curiosity with TLA's (three-letter acronyms) like 'CTA' and 'RPL'.....

Tail draggers, the best fun you can have with your pants on, assuming you do not soil them
I was tempted into a 90hp Piper Cub and it went from there and I ended up in a C180 (ZK JFG) which was a delight to fly, but always aware it could swap ends with little warning.
I also got checked out on a Citabria at the Latrobe Aero Club many years ago and took my father for a scenic. He was a Halifax pilot and POW during the war and ATC after.
At the tender age of five I had the total run of Launceston airport as we lived there. I have just clocked up 50 years in aircraft engineering and still active on a casual basis. In fact just on my way to Cairns to do a couple of small jobs for the week.

The Decathalon is relatively easy to land in my experience - the two planes I have owned were an Auster, also relatively easy, and then a Cessna 180, with which I learnt very early - do not relax until the wheels stop turning!

Hear Hear! My experience is on Auster, Pawnee, Tiger MOth and C185. The first three docile, the latter not so.
But the brakes were better on the C185- useful for catching a swing that threatened to get out of hand...

Admittedly I have only limited experience with the 185, but what experience I have had is that the 185 is a bit more docile than the 180, presumably due to the larger vertical stabiliser area. And agree about the brakes - heel brakes really take a special skill. And as to the brakes on the DH82A.......
