From an ABC article this morning:-

"The fuselage for Boeing 737s is made by Kansas-based Spirit AeroSystems, which separated from Boeing in 2005."
As I said above "MBA strikes again".

Hive off and outsource key parts of your business is a typical MBA approach following a takeover - in this case the McDonnell Douglas. It makes for a good result this quarter, but means that you lose direct control of the process, and soon lose the expertise to even know whether the work is being done properly. In a business like Boeing, this is a recipe for disaster. (See Indonesia and Ethiopia!)

Spot on John, or even attempted at all?

That lends it self to new, untrained &/. assembly staff & materials .

Being directly under the Adelaide to Melb take off path In future I shall be on the lookout for unknown materials & wandering PAX in the garden & paddocks & looking a bit dazed & disheveled.

Some of this is part of the core of the old novel by Michael Crichton, "Airframe". There is the discussion around outsourcing the construction of possibly the most complex part of a commercial jetliner, the wing.

In the ongoing battles between accountants and engineers, the wrong side usually wins.

If the wrong side wins then I think they should all be the first PAX on a new aircraft. Two problems solved in one, Testing of aircraft & getting shot of a plane load of Accountants.

I can just hear the boardroom discussion, "I think we should give the Wing assy to Joe Bloggs, they are a new crowd & just starting out & would like a foot in the door.. (or the window in this case.)

"All those in favour?........................................... ... The ayes have it. Gentlemen you have just saved us a motza"

If a door fell off a Land Rover, I doubt anyone would be surprised, but it would sure put a downer on the occupants' day.
If a door falls off a Boeing, one of the world's leading aircraft manufacturer, it would shock both crew and passengers and fairly upset their day.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Maybe the door came off the Boeing for the same reason it would come off a Land Rover. Poor QC.

Still speculative, but some possible explanations here:

This one is from a finance channel and thus is a touch hyperbolic but if the actual story part of it is true then it's pretty worrying for Boeing.
