EGR is a pain in the back, I'll try to take off these asap. All that goo in the inlet manifold cannot be healthy for any engine.

Just spent the afternoon cleaning out the EGR & manifold on our 160,000km TD4. We also own a Pajero DID and I blocked off the EGR in it at 21,000km. After seeing the state of the valve and manifold in the Freelander I'm glad I did it to the Pajero, and wish this one had been blocked at an early age!
The EGR valve was at least 30% blocked with the lovely oil / soot paste, as was the inlet manifold. It took a couple of hours and 5 litres of petrol but I got most of it out. It seems to go a little better now, although could be my imagination.
And who the hell thought to hide the air filter back there???
Cheers - Pat

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

I noticed there are some interesting aftermarket EGR valves on UK Ebay for these. The include a blanking plug and are a lot more open through the air inlet. Given how restrictive the factory EGR looks one of the aftermarket ones might be a good mod.
