How do I? Remove the Freelander L series Engine Exhaust Pipe

I need to replace the engine exhaust pipe on my L series - the bit that goes from the turbo to the cat converter. It is held on with 3 nuts to studs on the turbo elbow. I have managed to get the rear nut undone but not the other two.

From the side I can get a 15mm spanner onto the nut but there is no where for the spanner to move nor to put any torque on them to get them undone.

I can reach the drivers side one from below with a few socket extensions and a UJ but the angle is too great and the Uj locks.

So - any clues on how to get these two 15mm nuts undone?

Of course, if the nuts were on top of the flange rather than under it they could be simply unbolted from up in the engine bay.

    Thanks

    Hi Garry,

When I did mine recently I know at least two of them involved 1/8th turns, flipping the spanner at each turn to grab the next flat - if you know what I mean ? moving all the various wires / tubes / pipes out of the way to get a little more swing.

I have a pretty standard set of old VBW spanners and sockets - don't think there's anything too special about them as far as the angle of attack

I remember having a go at one of them from underneath - but it's a bit hazy as to whether that worked or I had to get up and complete it from above.

two of them unscrewed the studs from the turbo, rather than the nut off the stud.

Doesn't half do the back of your legs in leaning down into that engine bay though !

I'll check how I did it tonight - I'll be in there replacing the two rubber turbo pipes - I can hear boost leaking out somewhere, and they're both pretty old.

    Cheers,

    Scott.

Thanks - I can get a spanner on them but cannot get any leverage to turn it. On the drivers side one there is some stuff bolted to the exhaust manifold that gets in the way and will not be easily removed.

I did get one from underneath with the rattle gun but the angle on the others is too great for the socket UJ.

Feeling sookie today so will try later in the week.

    Cheers

Got them off - what a miserable job - the rear bolt came off from below with 2 feet of socket extension, a socket UJ and the rattle gun. The drivers side was also done from below but was too tight for the rattle gun - I had to use the 2 feet of socket extension and UJ but needed a 2 1/2 foot breaker bar to get the nut undone. The passenger side was done from above - the issue being that a spanner could go onto the nut but there was no leverage. I moved the steering to a position where it could be used as a pivot point so that I could move the spanner with a large lever.

When I bought the Freelander I was surprised at the lack of space around the engine compared to my V8 Disco but I have managed to do all my own work over the years (including belts and IRD) even with piggy fingers. However looking around my RRS engine bay the Freelander has space a plenty when compared to the RRS - I can see why the body needs to come off them to do any major engine work and most do not do their own maintenance.

Having said that I will be glad to see the Freelander drive away with a new owner hopefully in the new year.

A bit late now, but unbolt the elbow off the side of the turbo and the remove engine pipe bolts on the bench.

Thanks - thought of that but was worried I would just create more issues.

All back together now - just need to get the car off the jacks tomorrow.
