oh no looks like headgasket is on its way

Checking over the Freebie as I do every few days (have only had it a week, do you think I am paranoid!!) and I have a very very small sign of what looks like "mayo" inside the oil filler cap and a very slow loss of coolant. So I am asuming its the headgasket?
Are they fairly straight forward to change? I am no mechanic but can wield a set of spanners reasonably well. Are any specialist tools needed? Any do's and dont's I should be aware of? Thanks

The Freelander 1 can have one of four different engines - it might help if you tell us which one you are talking about.

    1.8 petrol
    L series diesel
    V6 petrol
    TD4 diesel.

I bet it is a 1.8 petrol - yes can be done but often there will be additional issues.

If its a 1.8 like previously stated, then join the masses before you. They are notorious for blowing head gaskets.
It would be wise to get a copy of "Rave' for the Freelander and study it before you start pulling things apart

Sorry, yes it is a 1.8 petrol. I know they have a reputation for headgasket failure. Could anything else cause the oil filler cap to be like this as the dipstick is fine. I only do short journeys in it, sometimes only 15mins tops, would this have the same effect as its not warming up properly (heres hoping anyway)

Keep a close eye on this engine. Do not let it get hot as you will be throwing the block out if you do.

As said previously get a RAVE manual

They are a easy head to do. There are special tools for the timing belt but all it does is locks the 2 cam sprockets together. You dont have to use it it just makes it easier.

Biggest dont with the job, do NOT turn the engine over with the head removed. This can pull the liners out.

There is a upgraded head gasket with a stronger oil rail it would be wise to fit both. There is also a upgraded thermostat, but wouldnt think there would be to many left that didnt have this upgrade as it old upgrade.

I recently sold my 98 diesel Freelander to a guy who had a 98 petrol freelander - same colour and trim as mine.

He bought the petrol Freelander a year ago for $500 as it had a blown head gasket. He is a mechanic and replaced the head gasket with the new type and he has been running it for the past year but last month it again blew the headgasket. Not wanting to go through the same routine again, and not knowing what additional damage was there he bought mine and will use the petrol as a spares vehicle for mine.

As has been said never let it get hot. Even in cold Canberra I know that a few used car dealers would take the thermostat out of the 1.8s while the car was on the lot to ensure the engine would not fail and on sell the car with the thermostat back in and where possible at a price that would not come with statutory warranty.

Is it possible to do an engine swap either for a diesel or engine form another manufacturer? Anyone ever done this?

Just not cost effective if it can be done - sorry to say it but do the head gasket and sell the car (sorry for the new buyer but they should do their homework) and buy something else.
