Dilema with V6 broken timing belt. Dilema with V6 broken timing belt.

Well readers I certainly have received a wonderful post Xmas present in the form of a broken timing belt in my V6 Auto Freelander 1.. It also appears that there may be valve damage as well. I had the car towed to a Landrover specialist and the verdict so far is $4600.00 plus labour to fit a reconditioned V6 engine, or $1200.00 to remove the engine and locate the problem(s) for starters.. So my dilema is is it worth spending this kind of loot on a car I paid $5000.00 for only last year. Sure, the paintwork and interior are faultless, the air conditioning will freeze eskimos, and the fact that I bought new mats, cargo cover, and the list goes on. My gut tells me to leave well enough alone and sell the car in its broken down state, but I did enjoy driving it whilst she was mobile. I would appreciate any commentary or suggestions from the brains trust that keep this forum alive. I am based in Sydney BTW.

Mate I feel your pain as a previous Freelander 1 KV6 owner.: I won't go into the long story so I will give you the short version. I won't go into the long story so I will give you the short version. Bought the vehicle in late 2009 ( had 88,000k's on the clock and looked a good buy)and as soon as it was out of warranty (3 months in this case) the auto tranny failed. Bought the vehicle in late 2009 ( had 88,000k's on the clock and looked a good buy)and as soon as it was out of warranty (3 months in this case) the auto tranny failed. $4,700 later plus $1500 because the tranny fluid had got into the motor and stuffed the plastic thermostat,we were up and running the car was immaculate, won us two trophies for best presented FL1 at the Castle Hill LandRover Expo in 2010 and 2011. It was an immaculate vehicle, we loved it.

Then the tranny started to play up again, quoted around $1500 to replace a solenoid. So we sold it. We were genuinley sorry to see it go because the wife and I loved it, but enough was enough. It was also due to have a timing belt change and that was going to cost the best part of $2,000 so that came into the descision also.

My suggestion.........sell it put your money into a Disco ........or at the very least a very late model FL1 with a diesel motor as I believe they are bulletproof. Better still a FL2 if the budget stretches that far as they are a complete redesign and appear to have no major problems..

 Umm, that's the short story!!!
