Cool Will buy TD4 2004 soon any suggestion?

    Hi all.
    I'm a new member here.

I have owned 2001 2.5 V6 petrol Freelander which is a crap 4 years ago, but I loved freelander pretty much except lots of bills on me to fix it again and again.
Now I'm about to purchase TD4 Freelander Auto as I heard that TD4 and MY 2004 would have not too bad compare to 2.5 V6 K series engine.
What I'm wondering is that if you guys have any suggestion to check or replace parts or oil, etc?
I had test drive the one yesterday and it looks and sounds good while I'm driving.
Automatic transmission was smooth and there's no vibration or strange sound.
Engine also sounds not bad, but I can't exactly judge the sound as I've never been driven a car with diesel engine.
It was little bit noisy when idling without vibration, but I heard that it's common on diesel engine cars.
I opened the boot and check any leaking of oil or coolant, but couldn't find any as far as I can check on my eyes.
So, just wondering if any common problems or your suggestion.
Also, is it worth to go to Landrover dealship to have a major service to check everything properly?

    Thanks, all the best.

The last of the FL1 s - TD4/Auto were the best of the lot with most of the issues sorted. Look for the usual things when buying a new car. Check the electrics all work, and in particular the rear window, also check the VCU is OK.

The TD4 is pretty reliable and has few issues.

Other than that there are few issues to check.

If you loved the 2001 V6 apart from the repair costs, then you'll be head over heels in love with the 2004 Td4. There's just no comparison between the two.

    Smile Thanks Garry & Scott

    Thanks for many help.

I just found that the car have T/C warning light & Hill Decent warning light problem. (sometimes not disappeared after few seconds of power on)
I did some homework through the forum and found that I need to change brake light switch, but wondering how can I do that by myself?
Is that switch means sort of fuse? I have no idea where is the location of the switch.
Is it better to ask them to fix it and buy it? but it will be pain to wait until the dealer fix it as I want to drive the lovely one even right now.
My real question is if I don't fix the problem, is it gonna be a bigger problem with break system or other mechanical problems? or is it just the Landie's computer is lost its mind?
Also, how to check VCU works properly?

    Thanks for your time.

Here is a thread that Garrycol made some time ago on checking the VCU of an FL1.
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/freelander...ander-vcu.html

Hope that helped. Also a quick check is to reverse the vehicle on full lock and if you feel "dragging" it could indicate VCU problems. Can't help you with your other queries though. Maybe some body else can help.........cheers...

ps. I used to own a 2001 KV6 FL1 also. I found the engine was excellent (although thirsty) never gave me a bit of trouble, but the auto tranny was garbage, I spent a small fortune on the auto box before finally calling it quits and getting rid of it. Both my wife and I loved that vehicle, but sadly it was just too troublesome to keep.

Thanks for putting up that old post.

As far as the 3 amigoes are concerned look for the easiest and most likely things first. (if TC and HDC are on so should ABS as they all use the same systems). If the ABS light is not on - check that it comes on as part of the globe check when you turn the ignition on.

In the FL1 the most likely cause of the fault lights is dirt in the air gab of the sensors so clear them with moderate pressure air or water - make sure you do not damage the sensors.

The next most common problem is a broken wire from the sensors up the suspension struts so check these.

The next most common problem is a faulty sensor - get the codes read and this should point to which sensor is playing up.

After that it gets more complex and the ABS codes should point you in the right direction.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Thank you so much

Thank you so much for your kind advice.
I needed to do homework harder
I tried the way on the video, and found that there is likely no problem with VCU!!!
Thank for giving me peace of mind.
    Now I'm almost there!
    Two thumbs up to you!!

    Many helps!!

At first, I would like to say THANK YOU!
I really surprised that how nice people here.
If I knew this forum before when I sold the V6 one, I wouldn't sell it as I can get lots of useful information from here.
By the way, I checked the car again today, and the light didn't come on anymore.
I think the dealer must have done something, and hope they did it in right way.
Anyway, I'm almost buy the one.
Thank you so much and I would call you 'Freelander Master'
Will post photos of my 2nd Freelander soon.

    Cheers!
