Is you F1 a manual or auto? Is a side issue - If a manual, poor gear changing in lower gears means you need to look at your clutch, linkage etc at the slave cylinder end.
Irrespective of what gearbox diff mounts are not likely to cause the symptoms you describe - normally just banging at the rear so I would be looking for other reasons for the poor gear changing.
However to answer your diff mount question.
Rear diff mounts comprise three units - two at the rear on either side of the diff and one mount at the front - it is this front one that carries more weight than the others and chews out about every 80,000km. The rears last pretty well but is obviously worth while doing the lot at the same time.
It can be done at home (I have done mine twice) is a pain as there is not a lot of room and requires moving the diff around a bit to fit the mounts - however is doable if you are patient and doesn't require any specialist skill.
