Freelander 2003 Petrol - Help Needed ! please
Hi Guys,
I am so happy found a land rover community atlast.
Hello to all firstly.
Few quick questions with regards to freelander1
I purchased 2003 Freelander in July 2013 this year, which has done 125000 kms, since then i have only driven 3000 kms, and lost peace with myself and spent close to 1000 dollars on it already not sure where i am heading with it.
Problems -
1) It had a coolant leakage frequently and diagnosed it to be a leak at the T from radiator so got the hoses replaced, still i feel it gets hot after driving for around 20 - 30 kms and im paranoid it might blew engine,
coolant reservior tank cap is partially broken, not sure if any steam is coming off it and make it hot.
2) when i do a right turn there is a grinding noise at the driver side from the tryes, not sure that is CV joints
3) most recent, last night, on the dashboard TC , HILL DECENT, ABS lights turned yellow/amber were on continously till i stopped the engine altogether.
4) the previous owner said they did the major service at 110000 kms, howdo we check that.
5) For freelander 1 when do we do the major services? ie timing belts etc.
I love my land rover, but i m not at peace with it,
Not sure where to start fixing these issues.
Thanks again guys.
Cheers
Dave

Hi and welcome.
1:V6 freelanders run hot. you can't run them without a radiator cap as they will boil with out it. I would get it changed. Also get one of these
Low Water Alarm Sensor
The K series engine hate getting over heated.
2&3: these are probably related as the grinding noise is setting off the ABS. being a grinding noise I would start with checking the brakes. CV usually click when worn.
4&5: I would do all filters and fluids at least every 40000km and timing belts are due at 120000km But would suggest 100000km.
Without receipts for timing belts done I would get them done as if they break on these they do major damage.

Concur with the probable causes as a previous owner.
Will add that build up of brake dust and gunk around the ABS sensor can also give you a few dash lights, generally just after driving off from starting the engine.
The plastic plumbing is junk, as is the early thermostat housing.
You will know it when the engine is actually hot, those fans wind up to sound like a turbine engine out of a heavy lift transport aircraft.
