Hope you have sorted your problem out, if not, my td4 04 had the very same hit and miss non start. Would turn over ok..
When it does start and you get into second, plant your foot, if it slowly acc. then your feel the turbo cut in, around 2500-3000 rpm and you take off to the moon, head is throwen back (dont forget to change gear), it's your fuel feed pressure pump. Mines beside the tank, next to the sub frame.
Once the fuel pump was changed, it would start every time and the acc was strong through all gears at low revs.
Bad news, pump was $600, good news, it was replaced under warranty.
