Thread: UHF for a freebie

For versatility in fitting you really can't beat the Icom IC-440. Unfortunately its not as cheap as some other options, but it has some key advantages:

1. Mic/Speaker/Controls all in handset and it can even be unclipped from the extension lead stored in the centre console when not needed.
2. 2m of extension lead to handset means base unit can go almost anywhere

The GME equivalent still has the speaker back on the base unit.

For mounting think about using black silastic (the windscreen variant). I used this to mount the UHF base unit in my D2 and D1 very successfully, no screws required

Can't help with the antenna mounting on a Freebie.

I have fitted an Icom IC-208H, for the same reasons as above, all controls can be operated via the handset.

The actual radio sits under the centre console (on top of the tunnel) forward of the gear stick. There is a fair bit of room in there.

I have one of the GME TX3440's with all the controls in the hand set... means that I have mounted the unit (which is very small) behind the seats and just have the hand set visible.

Only thing to consider with it is that the speaker is in the main body so dont bury it too deep!!

Is this radio hard to program for normal uhf? how is it done?

I just got me a little hand-held to tide me over until funds allow better, but was looking at the basic TX3220 and putting it above the rearview mirror, in that little 'sunglasses holder' which fits no glasses I know of.
The black plastic bit might need a little cutting, but I'm fine with that. Wiring can run across and down the A-Pillar...
Anyone see any major problems with this? Cord dangling down might impede view? Handpiece could fall off and scone you in the head?

Thanks for the picks, great help, looks like I'll go for the under seat model with the controls on the mike. what was the comment on programming by above ???

Cheers for the idea, but my 04 does not have sun glassers holder near the mirror. Is your a 3 door. Mines a 5 door.
Like the colour though.

mine is an '05 3-door.
I thought it would be the same around the forward areas...
