Thread: Rattling noise 2003 V6

The flaps in the inlet manifold can become noisy (for the variable intake system).
I'm sure I've seen someone repair these on here. At dealership level, the fix is usually a replacement manifold.

Scouse, thanks for information. I didnt expect a reply so quickly. Appreciate it anyway. I'm told the 03 V6 model was built by BMW who introduced plastic manifolds? I take it these flaps are prone to wear? Potentailly could thye or it come off and land inside the engine causing damage. BTW the vehicle has been grounded until Friday. Her indoors was not happy when I handed her the 130 keys as a substitute. She hates driving the pig gotta work it too hard and change gears too! :0

I've never come across the flaps falling off.


A customer may report a concern of a rattle from the upper area of the engine, possibly in conjunction with a slight loss of performance.
Cause:The variable intake system (VIS) intake flaps have become detached from the VIS power motor connecting/control arm. NOTE: If records show that Service Action A151 (now withdrawn) has previously been completed, the software is already at the latest level.

Action:Should it be necessary to renew the intake manifold following diagnosis of the above, the engine control module software should also be updated. The new software has a revised calibration which reduces the load on the VIS 2 system. Refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to update the software.

hmmmmm, reading this and other posts this noise sounds like it could be a small but expensive excercise. However I did see in one post that TRS do an aftermarket ifx for this problem. Not sure what they do might have to wait until Friday. The other problem is my mechanic although trained by LRO does not have the diagnostic software to critically analyse or recalibrate computer. I'm guessing I should take it back to a LRO dealer for this fix? Cheers.

I came across this I think it was a US site however do you know of any federal emmissions governace guarantee type arrangements with Land Rover here in OZ?

Note: I dont know your mileage but your intake manifold is covered by the federal emission warrenty so its covered up to 80,000 miles the reason I mention this is because your VIS motors are not the only thing that can fail on your intake...may times the control flaps inside the intake become loose and rattle. If this is happening on yours you can get the whole thing replaced at no charge

Not that I've ever heard of.
You can always go to a dealer & ask them to ask Land Rover.

Your prediction was correct!

Spoke to MLR who had serviced the vehicle once or twice. Response yes was a recall however your model was not recalled besides your outside recall window.

Then they state the noisy inlet manifold motors can sometimes be fixed by a software upgrade however sometimes means 50/50 chance. An hours labour @ $150. Might be worth a gamble have you or anyone heard of a software upgrade fixing this problem. I'm guessing the upgrade re calibrates the motor controlling the flap thingy s or something like that?

I suppose at the end of the day for $150 I will at least receive the latest software version and what ever enhancements that may include.
