    power issue - 02 TD4

    Hi All,

    newbie... good site!

Anyways, came out of a service recently and have had power problems at ~80% power up a hill (to those hobartians - the southern outlet). When I near the top of the hill it suddenly cuts out for about 15 sec before it regains power.

I'm thinking turbo issues, so I send it to another mechanic (not happy with prev one as they not only made brakes squeak, charge manic prices and broke my bonnet guard), who decide that its a couple of bolts on a feed to the turbo. Thanks very much I say...

Get it out of there and its the same... Seems that they didnt test it very well...

Anyone had similar issues? Ive left it because if I cruise up the hill its all good, but Im concerned for any longer term damage, and if I go on any longer term trips up big hills which are quite common in the Island State...

    Thanking all!

Check for leaks in the intercooler hoses and that the clamps are done up nice and tight.

Just a thought as we had a split in one of the hoses recently that severly affected power. Perhaps one of your hoses is only leaking when under a lot of load?

    Cheers, Paul.

Well, mate, with the symptoms you describe my bet would be a faulty MAF-sensor in first place. Might show up on the test book, but this requires access to such a device. Workshops usually want to see some coins or notes for the procedure. An easy check is to disconnect the MAF-plug (located somewhat awkwardly at the rear of the engine), which will force the ECU into using standard values. If the MAF-sensor is the real cause of the problem this will alleviate the symptoms. Next step after confirmation would be to replace the item.

The turbo hoses, as stated by Paul, are also a common reason for similar trouble. There is a thread about this further down in the forum. Although I would assume your car would be real slow, not only uphill, belching out clouds of smoke in the process. Cutting out is not part of the story either. Furthermore, any grease monkey worth his salt would see the split in the hose and all the oily mess.

The next thing to look at would be the fuel pump, but here you would rather expect bad/non-starting and not necessarily the symptoms you describe.

Good luck! And welcome to AULRO, of course!
    Cheers
    Johannes

Sounds like a boost pressure sensor. it is mounted on the inlet manifold. the manifold will have to be removed to remove the sensor its the only sensor on the inlet manifold. the inlet manifold get gummed up with carbon from the EGR. try cleaning the sensor with contact cleaner.
