I think this is it. The FL2 can now safely be considered a reliable vehicle. They've been making these things for 6 years now and there's been no common major issues. A few diffs, a gearbox or two but really I haven't read much bad going on with them.
Mines on 65k, still love driving it.

2010 FL2TD4. Almost 40000km and not a single problem. So happy getting a Disc4 as well.

I can't stand it anymore too but I have a serious problem. 2007 Diesel Freelander 2 with only 65,000km and the engine totally shuts down in mid-traffic on a busy city road. Dealer says they have no idea but that I need a new engine as they cannot figure out what is wrong after a week in service!! $16,000 bill for a new engine and then a one year warranty only as it is parts. This car has been serviced always by the Land Rover dealer and they have only seen such a catastrophic failure in an engine 2-3 times in over 20 years. I cannot afford $16,000 right now and I cannot trade-in a non-running car. Ideas anyone? Has anyone heard of such an engine freeze. Service thinks it could be a failure of the valve which hit a piston.

Is 65,000 km considered a fair life for an engine? Australian Consumer law requires goods must be durable.

Have you tried discussing the failure and possible remedies directly with LandRover.

I would get a 2nd opinion. Changing the engine when you don't know whats wrong seems strange. If it is a valve that has hit a piston, why cant the valve be replaced and the head be repaired or replaced and the piston changed if it is damaged.

You said it shuts down in traffic. Does that mean that it still runs or it shut down and hasn't gone since?

Thanks but to get a second opinion from who as that would mean another tow to someone. Frankly, I would have hoped that the Land Rover dealer/service would be the best equipped or am I wrong. The car has not been able to restart since it froze in mid-traffic.

Thanks Ferret. A very interesting You Tube on Consumer Law. There is no question that I would have expected the durability of this LR to exceed 65000km considering the driving and service history. I think you may have given me some grounds to go back to LR as it was a major failure. These vehicles were designed for rough terrain and an engine life of at least 200,000km.

the consumer guarantees all talk about "reasonable"

"reasonable" is where things get murky

until it has been defined in the courts there is no definition of value for "reasonable"
