LR post-warranty "good will" request

Hi guys,Long time reader, first time poster haha

Hoping you guys can give me some tips in dealing with Land Rover Australia on a post warranty good-will request.
I've got a 2009 Freelander 2 Si6 HSE. The engine is a 3.2Lt 6cyl Petrol. Best car I've ever owned - great on or off road

I bought it second hand two years ago, so it still had 1 year new car warranty remaining (yes I'm kicking myself for not purchasing the extended warranty).
I immediately noticed that the car had trouble with its cold start... Press the button once, engine tried to start but doesn't fire up, press the button again and it starts immediately.
I took the car in to Melbourne City Land Rover on several occasions and asked them to take a look... I even left the car with them for a week on one occasion. Their diagnostics could see the effect of the issue, but not the cause.
So, time passes, I stopped worrying about it, the warranty expires, the problem gets worse, and then we finally identify the cause: the fuel pump isn't priming and needs to be replaced. $2,000

So here's my questions:
Has anyone else had trouble with their fuel pump on this engine ?
- What is LR's approach to issues such as this (where there is a problem during warranty but we don't figure out the cause until post warranty) ?
- Any tips on lodging a successful post warranty good will request ?
(I'm getting the printed history from the dealer and will submit it with my claim)
Any help or tips would be GREATLY appreciated !!

I think legally as you notified them of the issue during warranty it still has to be covered. If you have evidence that you notified them - ie shoudl be noted on the service receipts etc, then I think you will be fine.

The engine is a Ford/Volvo so try other sources for the part if they don't want to play nice. I do that with my Jeep, it has Mercedes parts which are usually around half the price of Jeep for the exact same part.

No idea about the Freelander, but on the RR classic, you can replace the submerged fuel pump with one off a Holden commodore at a fraction of the cost of genuine.

Also look up the UK Land Rover parts vendors, they often land parts via airfreight cheaper and quicker than locally sourced items. for example John Craddock lists the Freelander 2 fuel pump and sender unit at £206.64 exc. VAT LR038602 - Sender and Pump

However, it may be a case of being a body off procedure to access the top of the fuel tank and hence the cost.

If the problem was definitely there before the vehicle was out of warranty,it should be done under warranty.
They will have the paper trail on what was done to the vehicle.
The only issue may be you are not the original purchaser of the vehicle.

Keep the pressure on them.

You would think they would be able to drop the tank,instead of taking the body off.

There is no chassis in an FL2 so you have to be able to drop the tank, i cant see how they can justify $2k for a $300 odd part plus labour

I believe there's access under the rear seat for the pump/senders.

I recon it is an out for the manufacturer.
I had an issue with another brand vehicle that was bought second hand and they were not interested.Vehicle was in warranty when we purchased it,but just out when we had an issue.
I have not been in that situation with LR,you will have to see how you go,but keep trying.
