I've done thousands of kms on most of the Outback tracks, hit plenty of rocks and corrugations. During that time I've had 6 tyres destroyed but never had a failure with a rim. Rims for the FL2 are pretty scarce and I've not come across any steel ones except for hearing about 16" ones in the UK on the base model diesels (they won't fit the petrol brake caliper). 16" would open up a lot of cheaper tyre possibilities, that's for sure. If you find some 16-17" steelies then there are people on here interested in getting them as well. For outback travel, stick with a tyre size that is a little more common. 245/65/17 is way more common than 245/70/17, but neither are very common at little outback roadhouses. I had to wait overnight for 2 245/65/17 Bridgestone Duelers to get to Marree, I didn't have a choice in brand it was those or nothing.
