There is a key for emergency opening the doors. It is in the back of the fob. The alarm will sound but will go out when fob is inserted into receptacle. The battery in the fob is not required to start it, it is only for remote locking. There is a RFID chip that gets read when fob is inserted into receptacle. Fob battery is not required for RFID chip to work.

I agree that the fob battery is a pain in the backside. The hidden key only works in the passenger door and the alarm will sound. Whoever thought that system up was an idiot and it is enough of a pain for you to look elsewhere for a car. I have done the battery re-solder myself with no real issues and it cost $5. Still, it would have made more sense to have a removable battery like other cars. The electrics in Land Rovers are complicated enough. Another vote for a key!

Incorrect!

The Early Freelander 2 (07MY-12MY) had a key that would slot into a key pick-up in the dash.
This key, its battery would charge whilst in the dock, but as with all batteries in time would need replacing & yes would have to crack open the waterproof case & re-solder in a new battery.

The Newer Freelanders (13MY+) do not have a dock & are true keyless start. The Key Fob is the same as a D4 version & has a replacement battery (You also get a warning on the dash to let you know when the battery is going flat) which is a CR2032. Takes 5 seconds to replace.

Does that mean the newer models don't have any key at all?

My MY13 key fob once I have unlocked the car, can then put it in my pocket.

Accustomed to a car from the dark ages, no ABS or airbags just to name a few. I'm still not accustom to the keyless start, or keyless anything for that matter, but getting there slowly.

I might get a spare battery or two just in case, and leave one in the car.
