Can someone please help me?? Just paid 15k and about to take the car to the wreckers

Hi, as above, spent 15k last week on a Freelander 2 TD4 2012 with 95kms on the clock. Got a pre purchase done, everything apparently OK. An hour after buying it (engine warm) I realised it hesitates and then jerks/shudders at traffic lights after accelerating, sometimes slowly slipping back beforehand. It sometimes does this when just stopped in traffic too. I have taken it to several mechanics, two transmission specialists and got two diagnoses- one says full transmission rebuild because the torque converter is screwed the other says it just needs a valve body replacement. At this point I don't know what to do, and my budget did not allow for a full trans rebuild. Has anyone had any experience with this or can point me in the direction of a good transmission specialist??
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

A good Land Rover specialist might be the go. Which part of Sydney are you in?

Was it from a dealer or private sale? If a dealer you might have a warranty.

If it's a dealer you DO have a warranty. 3 months. If so contact them ASAP to arrange for them to fix it. Be courteous. Private purchase, no warranty.

I have always thought Freelanders are a nice looking car. Best wishes and hope you find a good mechanic that can correctly diagnose the problem.

those symptoms point to slipping clutch packs in an underserviced transmission.

you might get lucky because its such low K's and get away with a fluid flush filter change and a valving clean out but Its not likeky to be a long lived fix. I would be looking at it being at least a minor rebuild of the auto.

I could bore you with the technical details of why it happens but (and this is a guess based on very limited info and adding a sydney markup) you'll probably not see change out of $10k for a drive in drive out overhauled transmission solution.

If you got it from a dealer it should be covered. Private sale and given how quickly it onset you might have a shot in a court case with someone not disclosing a known fault prior to sale.

    Best of luck.

The FL2 has a Japanese Aisin TS80 transmission. Variations of this trans were fitted to a range of vehicles including our Peugeot 407. It has a pretty good reputation, but benefits from a service at about those km I’m told.

The same motor/trans was fitted to the early Evoque and Discovery Sport. I would find an independent Land Rover specialist or dealer that knows these vehicles well.

Your car is less than 10 years old and under 100,000kms so you have a warranty if the car was purchased from a dealer.

My brother bought a Landcruiser after the local Toyota Dealership provided a pre-purchase inspection. When he went to have it re-registered the workshop rejected the vehicle as the Chassis in the rear was rusted through. Back to Toyota and with the help of a well worded letter from a legal representative the dealership bought the car off him. Can you pursue that route?
