    What!

So I am at the stage where the 2014 Freelander 2 really needs an auto trans fluid change.

I guess I should have know that the LR fluid would be a 'little' costly........but hey I was somewhat taken aback at a price around $100.00 per litre!

The 2014 Freelander 2 is fitted with an Aisin AWF21 6 speed auto trans as are some fords and toyota's and I am wondering if anyone on this forum has sought (like me) an alternative to the LR ATF for their Freelander?

    Hi mate,
Been doing a little research as I might be buying a Freeby 2 later this year.
Penrite LV Trans fluid is the one you want.

    cheers

Nothing special with the FL2 auto.

I've been using Valvoline Max Life ATF in everything for more than 10 years. In my L322, Jag XJ8, FL2 and a bunch of customer cars. Its great and never had an issue and you can get it at Bunnings for like $35 for 4L. Its full synthetic and a higher spec than what is needed in the FL2.
    .
But there are a bunch of haters out there that will say only use Land Rover Oil. But the way I see it as if the oil meets the spec use it.

    What Indeed

The Freelander 2 is fitted with the Asian AWF21 6 Speed Automatic Transmission.

This transmission is, I beleive, fitted to a number of other vehicles including both Ford and Toyota.
Ford recommend the following trans fluid for the AWF21 transmission, Ford Motocraft Fluid XT8QAW which I am informed is not available here in WA or Aus for that matter? Toyota (who own or part own Aisin) use the AWF21 trans in some of their vehicles recommend Toyota T-IV fluid for the trans.

An equivalent to the LR 0022460 part ATF is from what I have been able to find on the web is also the Nippon AW-1, which equals to Aisin Warner AW-1, which equals Ford E-AW WSS-M2C924A which equals Volvo 31256774 which is also GM Vauxhall 93165147, never mind Mobil 3309!

    What a bloody minefield!!!!!!

On checking the various lubricant websites there are also a number of other possibilities these being

    Shell Spirax S6 ATF-X

    Valvoline Maxlife ATF
Penrite Multi Vehicle Full Synthetic ATF FS

    Nulon Full Synthetic Multi Vehicle

    Mobil Dexron - VI ATF

    Castrol Transmax Z

    Castrol Transmax Multi Vehicle

I have also further researched other ATF fluids that are compatible and had a look at the Ravenoil TW-S Lifetime AT fluid.

Equally I have had a look at auto trans fluids as supplied to the trade and have found the Lubeguard fluid also recommended for Freelander 2 vehicles. I am still researching the Toyota T1V ATF as from what I have read thus far I believe it to be compatible.

From my reading thus far I believe that the Ravenoil TV1 and the Toyota TV1 are basically the same product but I have yet to confirm this thought.

On checking the Ravenoil ATF T-WS Lifetime or the Ravenoil T-IV are both ok but the Ravenoil ATF T-WS Lifetime is specifically mentioned for the Freelander 2 in their documentation. I reckon I will go for that.

My 2014 FL2's transmission has become clunky over the past 12 months. It's intermittent and occurs when when I take my foot off the brake at a set of lights. I took it to the local auto transmission specialist and he change the oil and said the old oil was jet black. It's improved but still happens occasionally when hot. The FL2 had 160,000km when the oil was changed and we plan to change it again at 175,000km. The LR maintenance interval is 250,000km.

'Oils aint oils' to quote the old addvertisement!

    Superhet,

I have now owned 5 Land Rovers over the last number of years. D1 gone, D2 gone, D3 gone, D4 Still my vehicle and the Freelander 2 my good wife's truck!

All of the vehicles being automatics. I normally try to change out the ATF at around the 80,000km mark. I have slipped up on the Freelander 2 and it is at 90,000km. I don't believe in the 'sealed for life' stuff that manufactures go on about. Oil is generally cheap maintenance! I reckon 80,000km is about the reasonable life of the AT fluid given the way I use my vehicles. My search for an alternative to the genuine LR ATF has been about my opinion on what I reckon is exorbitant pricing, or not to put to finer point on things 'being had a lend off' by LR in their price for the genuine ATF.

As for the distance between ATF changes there is no chance I would let the trans go over 100,000k without a fluid change. But hey, that is just my perspective, and no doubt others will think differently.

    Just sayin!

Nulon Multitrans full synth, used in last 2 changes no problems (2011 model), try and follow sequence to get level right. Ideally need to be able to check trans temp for last step.

    followup of post #5

Well after 14000km the clunking has returned, not as bad as last year but after having a leaking radiator replaced a couple of weeks ago it's become quite bad. So it was back to the transmission workshop to get the oil replaced. The mechanic says the oil was black again and black oil was a sign of overheating. Since I've only towed my 1800kg caravan about 800km since the last oil change I'm thinking I need a bigger oil cooler.
Has anyone add an additional transmission oil cooler?

Changing the tranny fluid in a FL2 couldn't be easier.

I mentioned Valvoline Max Life ATF a couple of posts ago. What do you think it's cheap so it's no good?

My wife's FL2 has been on this for at least 5 years without a problem. She first had an issue with a bit of shuddering on gear changes after 155k. After changing out to Max Life ATF we've had no problems at all.

But as the car has 245k on it now I should probably think about changing it out again.
