I suspect you meant to type VCU (Viscous Coupling Unit) which on a Freelander 1 is a sealed unit positioned in the centre of the prop shaft containing a viscous fluid to effect transmission engagement of the rear axle.
You have posted on the Freelander 2 thread. The Freelander 2 does not have a VCU, but instead has what LR refers to in its technical manual as the "Active on-demand coupling" but it is in fact a Haldex Generation 4 wet clutch bolted on the front of the rear differential. This device is also used in some VAG, Ford and volvo vehicles.
Indaba, do you have a Freelander 1 or 2?

						SupporterNo, I do not
This is a mates car, I admit that I know nothing about it, BUT ..... this is the start of the learning curve
One bloke said that they are sealed, THAT!!!!! I willguess is the cause of problem
We will have to wait and see
I have been trying to get or borroe a workshopmanual
Doashcrofts have them??
Well we need to know what vehicle you are talking about - the Freelander 1 and Freelander 2 are completely different vehicles. The Freelander one has a Viscous Coupling (uses fluid) where the Freelander 2 uses a Haldex system of clutches to regulate drive to the rear.
Tell us what vehicle it is so we can answer.
