Thread: GCLRO Fraser Trip - Logistics

For those who are aware, then you know this topic is to sort out the logistics of the trip... in particular, the camping side of it.

We seem to have around 15 cars coming with numerous passengers... my usual plan of attack is to make sure everyone is sufficient to a degree as we are camping on the oceanside of Fraser behind the dunes so will need to be completely self-sufficient... but on the other-hand, not everyone will want to go and purchase all the extra bits and pieces needed to achieve this.

Please post any thoughts you have on achieving total peace and harmony on Fraser Island

Tent size really depends on the number of people you are accomodating. You will never pack 4 people into a 4 person tent with all the gear.

We have a seven man coleman tent for my three boys and a 9'x12' southern cross for the missus and me. Its overkill but well worth it. We did 4 weeks in the southern cross for the five of us through the simpson and onto Alice and Uluru. Never again in one tent.

That said If you have a young family look a couple of sizes bigger than needs to allow for all the gear to be placed inside during the inevitable storm.

Tarps/poles sand pegs etc are all a good purchase but for your first outing you may be able to tag onto another campsite and use a communal tarp.

As to canvas type I've got both and the southern cross is heavy but will outlast me. The coleman is weatherproof and we got it for a song so it is value for money to me. Its much lighter, compact and generally foolproof to set up. Coloured poles into coloured sleeves. We've had other tents mostly dome ones that haven't lasted well. The new geodesic ones look good (more usable floor space) but were too expensive for the size for me.

I'll leave fridges to someone else I have a 40l Engel but I'm old school and the newer stuff may suit you better.

We use a large piece of shadecloth for the floor as the sand brushes off your feet before entering the tent. Also good for spills around camp compared to a tarp on the ground.

We have a coleman 2 burner LPG stove and a large 'Drifta' camp kitchen which is brilliant.

We built up our collection over the past 10 years and it has all lasted well.

My recommendation is buy the best quality you can afford but don't buy the gimmicky stuff stick to basic good quality gear.
