I've seen some of your coal mining heritage, great stuff. But since the electricity grid is linked from Ceduna to Hobart to Cairns these days there will be plenty of paths to take up little variations in load not dependent on coal. Energy companies keep up their profits by quickly moving power to demand. I have been told by wind energy boffins that up to 20% renewables is safe with this amount of grid interconnection, so earth hour will show up less than a coffee break during the AFL grand final.

The Green Lobby must think we are all idiots. Commonsense dictates that we switch off lights when they don't need to be on. Earth Hour is a waste of time, money and effort by a self serving few!

Bugger! I'll be in Darwin on that day. I'll call my wife and ask her to turn them on.

If all the lights go out, they might think we've all gone home for the weekend so it would be a good time to invade.

I kept my lights on I feel I do not need to do this as when I moved into my house (and the banks) I fitted solar hotwater and solar power,
just waiting for some greenie to give me a hard time about the planet destroying 4wd I drive.

When I was young always getting told off for leaving lights on but this was back in NZ where power is alot more expensive because the goverment sold everything to bussiness, this is going to happen here??

Why is anybody bothering to mention the amount of power saved or wasted by this exercise?

As WhiteD3 said right from the start, this exercise is not about saving power, it is about raising awareness.

The fact that several people have responded, even if only to rubbish the idea, is proof that it has succeeded in doing what it set out to do, ie make people think about the issue.
