Whao 32 replies...as mentioned the whole point is to raise awareness. Sooner or later something drastic will have to happen regarding climate change, some might not care as they will be 6 feet under when the **** starts hitting the fan. My generation will have to be the one who will have to implement change and deal with the consequences of generations past. Call me a greenie, but we only have one Earth, and while it might not effect you directly, think of the ones who will be here after you...and if you don't care well.....

Where I work burns more power in 1 minute than I consume in 10 years...

Besides sitting in the dark, what will it achieve... SFA.

I'll sit in the dark when camping or fishing, but at home.. Nope

You should do some research, its not about not caring, its about whats a pragmatic thought into the whol thing, the fact is, turning your lights off does nothing better, than make you feel better and stimulate conversation from people who rave, something must be done, but can't offer a solution

Nuclear power is the answer for clean base load generation, once this desalanation plant is built in vic, it'll be intersting to see what gets built next

There has not been another base load generator built, since Loy yang B......and that only had 2 of the 4 units builts, we're very far behind and populating quickly

What's your propostion into climate change and keeping green in regards to power generation?

Hendrik, I'm with you but the sad fact is that the majority of us will have to be dragged kicking and screaming, choking on CO2, to the new energy age.

We (humans, an apathetic lot) will only make the tough decisions when no other option is available.

So what is your proposal for clean(er) energy sources?

I do agree, human nature dictates that we relie on necessaty becoming the means, but what forethought do you have to fix the situation?

I don't. We'll be forced to act at the last minute, or after its too late (call me a cynic).

But...............I would like to see serious money and time spent on developing fusion and solar technologies and more importantly in the short term (IMHO) energy storage so that energy generated by alternative means can be stored for later use. I'm a fan of the electric car, not because it's any greener now (burning coal to make electricity) but because it'll drive technological change.

Something other than oil is inevitable as oil will run out sooner or later............or more likely be too expensive for us normal folk.

Electric cars are coming, the trick is to not have them charging all at the same time at peak load. New Scientist magazine says where electric cars arrive in numbers the charging will be remotely controlled by smart metering. Another method is to use the batteries of electric cars as short term storage on the grid, in times of peak demand the grid will borrow power from the car battery. It's all today's technology and it will be trialled in various parts of the world soon.
As Australia has huge amounts of sunshine solar power has still a way to go. Some base load generation is possible with solar heat storage using molten salts.
I am looking forward to the development of future energy technologies as its all very interesting to me as an engineer. Having built my e-bike from Chinese technology the e-car kit will follow as surely as night follows day.
