    Gday Terry,

I have no reason to doubt what you say , but my understanding is that it is the wheel size that the model came out with , not the individual spec..
So if any model D3 came out with a 17' or 16 for that matter then its a legal size rim on any spec in the range..

I have been wrong many times before tho..

    Cheers Ean

Perhaps "issues" is too strong a word. And maybe "quibbles" may be where some of these items should fall under.

And since Land Rover haven't got a vehicle that fits my requirements, it would still be a LC200 purchase very much so, if I had the opportunity again.

I never said that the LC200 is the perfect vehicle, but for my specific requirements, it's the pick between the two. And everybody's circumstances and requirements are very individual, so for some, picking the D4 is absolutely the right choice.

Personally I think it's stupid we to pay better than 50 grand today to buy a basic family sized vehicle and 75+ to get something with a good level of basic comforts and then have to put up with stupid problems like oil consumption and wrong rims sizes. Pat

    Hi Ean,

it is often stated on this website when people have asked about fitting different sized rims on their V8 D3's that the minimum legal rim size for a V8 D3 is 18" because that is the minimum size a V8 D3 comes with in AUSTRALIA. That being the case using the same criteria it should be the same for the 3.0 litre D4 with thier standard fitment 19" rims that nearly everyone on the D3/D4/RRS section are complaining about.

Why I asked it here was 19" rims on a D4 was one of the reasons given for buying a LC200. If 18's can be fitted then one of the largest bugbears for potential D4 owners is no longer an issue.

So is it legal to fit 18" rims on a 3.0 litre D4 or not?

And if it is legal why can't V8 D3's fit 17 inch rims legally like TDV6s can?

Surely both models fall under the same legal requirements that are often quoted on here.

    cheers,
    Terry

The v8 D3's have bigger brakes making it physically impossible to fit 17 inch rims. 18 is the smallest rim you can fit. Same with the 3.0 ltr D4 the smallest rim you can physically fit is the 19 although a special order rim has been made for 18's.

    Thanks for that Trobbo,

so all the stories about not being legal to fit 17's in Australia to a V8 D3 are bunkum?

    cheers,
    Terry

unfortunately every state has different laws as to what is legal and what is not and what can be engineered. Road and vehicle mod laws like so many other laws in this great country of ours should be uniform i.e federal laws rather than state based.

In vic you can increase / decrease by 25 mm from the biggest / smallest placarded wheel for that vehicle. Dont know about other states. The tyre placard on my D3 does not distinguish between engine fitments. Just lists from 17 through to 19 inch.

sorry it's not a straight answer.

    Hi Terry,

Perhaps the issue with not being able to fit 17" diameter wheels to a V8 D3 is nothing to do with legalities, but simply because the smaller wheel will physically not fit.

I believe that the V8 D3 has a larger wheel than the V6 or the TDV6 D3 simply because larger brake calipers are fitted. So if you try to fit a 17" wheel to a V8 D3, it will not go in because the wheel rim will foul against the calipers on the fronts.

The rear brakes are smaller so you can fit 17" to them, I believe....

    Happy to stand corrected!

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the D4 with the 2.7td has the same brakes as D3. The 3L option has the bigger brakes.
