everyone talking me out of buying a Disco!

Thinking of buying a 2003 Disco with 90k kms... a few issues nothing major came from the report apart from an oil leak which could be $$ to fix.

Every man and his dog is trying to talk me out of buying it! Should I? What am I up for with one of these? We currently have a euro car so used to expensive servicing etc. I'm just worried about reliability etc.

    Thoughts??

    Thanks

The Discovery is fundamentally a good (excellent) vehicle.

However you will be buying a 7 year old piece of machinery...if it has been properly serviced (records as evidence) any underlying issues will have been sorted by now. I wouldn't buy any vehicle without this.

Every man and his dog are not necessarily the best judges! Due to a great deal of misinformation and much barking.

Very important, also get it checked by a LR specialist, not a dealer. The average mechanic will know nothing about Land Rovers.
If it is the D2a,update model, they were the best D2's

    Good luck

    Thanks one iota

I did have a look at the log book and it has been religiously serviced by Ayres in Brookvale, Sydney.

The oil leak is a bit of a concern as apparently they have to take out the transmission to fix it... (eeek I can hear the cha-ching) but if we can get some money off the purchase price it could still be a goer.

People are very negative about Land Rovers - it's quite amazing the response I've had when I say I want to buy one! I think the main issues seem to be from the early models.... teething probs etc. This was one of the last Disco II's so hoping things were ironed out by then.

Hmmm not sure... it's a MY2003 HSE D2 so I think would have been one of the last D2's

    They're right.

Don't buy the Discovery, buy a Defender.

Most people are very negative about Land Rovers based on very little fact and mostly on rumour.

The people here are negative about Land Rover based on fact but are also very positive balanced by experience.

So do some more reading here before you leap.

    Yes, buy a Defender.

    But a Discovery isn't a bad decision.

or is it every Toyota and Patrol lover and their dogs saying that,
or are they just I know someone that spoke to some one that read somewhere that some one else heard that they are problematic?

If it has the pocket type headlights,it is a D2a

Umm,that oil leak may be the double seal, between the gearbox & transfercase.Once fixed properly, doesn't re occur.Usually dirt causes the problem, once the job is done & the cases are sealed together ,it's all good .
