Two of my mates listened to the experts and bought troopy's,13 years and one complete engine, one half engine, two gearbox's,three transfer cases and many many minor parts later they are still going,I didn't listen and bought a defender,428,000k's later I've spent about 3K on it,mostly on things that simply wore out through use. You obviously want it or you wouldnt be on a Landrover forum for us to talk you into it.
It might be a few years old now but it is still a rather luxurious car that is very capable off road.
You wont regret it.
You are right - I DO want it... and maybe want to be talked into itBUT I guess I just wanted your views on why everyone is so anti... and to ask 'are they really that bad'. I just want to feel like I'm not buying blindly... and I guess I needed some good news after reading landroverhell.com!
Hi,
Didn't do much research before I "took the plunge" but have not regretted it at all. Had "concerns" about the chatter coming out of the knitting circle initially but the price was right for what I bought and given what else was on offer in my price range, I think I got the best deal possible on a safer and newer vehicle that is cheaper to run and more comfortable to boot.
One way to talk your self into it is compare a similar highly spec'd (say a 03 sahara or what ever the top of the range pootrol is) against the 03 D2 HSE, hopefully the price difference will astound and given the much better bus the rover is, any issues you may need sorting out (nothing to say the others wouldn't have these anyway) could be fixed out of the cash left over, and then possibly some left over for mods if that your thing?
Diesel Sahara
Petrol Sahara
Diesel HSE
Petrol HSE
I've taken a few liberties with the comparison vehicles I know (tried to go bottom of Toyota and top end of LR to prove a point and TD5 HSE is a rare beast by whats available on carsales) but it was what I did to talk myself into my first rover.
Hope it helps and welcome to AULRO.

I have the model before the one you're looking at. (2002). But had the same kms when I got it. I do a lot of towing and a bit of offroad. Things I've had to do (apart from servicing):
Front left ABS sensor - $90
Fuel pressure regulator - $400
Viscous fan hub - $440
I am about to get the ABS modulator rebuilt - $1400
The only show stopper I have had is when I got water in the diesel and I chose not to drive it. (the manual says you can drive it but I chose not to).
My experience has been that the D2 has been extremely cheap motoring when compared to a cruiser. Even with the above items, I'm thousands of dollars in front. I have a mate with a 105 cruiser and there is no way in the world I'd swap. Even he jokes that diff seals are a service item.
BTW this is my first LR and I'm a convert. I wanted a prado before I got this one. I dodged a bullet there.
