    Hi
Dubai is a ****hole........so my suggestion having been there many a time over the last 20 years or so is to avoid it if poss !!.......If you cannot then I would suggest the following from which you can take a choice depending on what you want to do
    Day Time
1.4wd driving on the dunes ....google it you'll find some operators
2, Jebel Ali Gun Club - good fun for a few hours nice indoor range with modern weapons.
3.Go Skiing at the Emirates Mall
    4.Shopping etc at Emirates Mall.
    5. Any number of the top Hotels will let you use their pool facilities or beach clubs for a fee for the day .......a good option if you are in less spectatcular lodgings.

    Night Time
Again depends on what you want !
1.Most of the big hotels will offer a variety of good eateries with excellent produce most of which is imported from Aus. Of particular value is the buffet type offerings so look out for those as they often include beer and wine ..the Shangri La on Shiek Zayed rd is very good for that.
2.Night Clubs .......Cyclone and Imperial suites if you are looking for ladies of a less reputable nature!
3.Tuesday and Sunday are ''ladies nights'' with normal/hotel bars offering free drinks to girls.
    4. Time Out Dubai ......will have all listings and goings on
    Some links

Finally .........do be carefull ........remember it is still a Muslim country despite being able to get just about what you want, the law gets applied at their convienience if you get my drift ......

    Cheers

Spend as little time as possible in the airport. It is a new huge and soleless building with prices that are equal to or dearer than UK high street prices.

Check out the price of gold in Australia as if you can find the right place to buy in Dubai you can turn a nice profit on it when resold at home. Price is keen as the Indian workers take their pay home in gold. Best to speak to a local jeweller before you go to find out about resale in Australia price. Remember though that the price of gold can go down as well as up.

A former colleague went to Dubai late 2008 on a very silvery two year contract. Their company apartment was still being refurbished when they arrived . They were put up in a quite flash hotel in downtown Dubai for a week. They then moved to the apartment in a locality 25 minutes drive from downtown and which he describes as "the Chermside of Dubai".
