    Well, mine came on Saturday.

My son and I decided to go sailing on his 14' catamaran. We went to Eastern Beach, right in the heart of Geelong. Great sailing, and then it was time to go home.

I backed the trailer into the water - quite a long way because it was shallow and the tide was right out. My boys were putting the boat on the trailer so I just shut the Rangie down and waited for them to finish. Shutting it down was a pretty dumb thing to do!

Boat on the trailer, went to start it. Nothing but clicking at the starter motor.

Cut a long story short, I had to get towed out of the water - the tide was rising fast! - by my son's Commodore! With half of Geelong watching!

Back on the beach. Called the RACV - it turns out to be a dud starter motor. He jumped the terminals and the car started immediately and we could drive it home. I've got a new starter motor coming - thanks Andy and Erich!

And thanks to Paul, Ron, and Andy for your help on the phone!

Lesson learned? Don't shut the car down when its in the water, and certainly not with a rising tide!! I mean, that was pretty dopey!

Now, why don't they build these cars with a crank handle ...!!??

cant top the hospital run. but 4 bolts in my transfer case come loose in the middle of caladonia river track about 3 to 4 hours from any town. The bolt wized around everywhere turning into little splinters, punching a hole through the side wall. Pulled it apart removing debris, making it the front wheel drive rangie. Then glued a beer can on the inside of the transfer case to stop the oil escaping and finished the trip

    Worst:
We'd been out on our boat on Aussie day last year. My mate backed the disco down the ramp and I drove the boat up - after pulling the boat (23' trailer sailer) up the ramp I stopped at the wash point to hose off, disco wouldnt start again. Got a jump from my mate, then the wife and I headed home. Got halfway up the hill from the Roseville bridge (in Sydney) when the disco stopped - no electrics at all. Caused a huge traffic jam (made the radio) before the NRMA came and hooked up a spare battery to get us off the road.

Turned out the alternator had died. A costly little job...

    2nd Worst:
Had a S3 wagon, had just picked up future mother-in-law from the Brissy airport during peak hour. Stopped at a set of light in right hand turn lane, went to take off again and BANG - overdrive input gear exploded. Had to put the MIL into a cab and wait on the side of the road for my Dad to come with his Rangie and give me a tow.

Now I always carry the bits to remove the overdrive...

Ah well, I'm a die-hard Landy man and will never change...

Not that dopey Willem, I have always been taught that you should turn off because the idling vehicle is very likely to vibrate itself down and get bogged.
If you are able to get on the trailer quickly then no worries, but in your situation I probably would have turned off as well.

Our old Tdi Disco had an immobiliser problem and would often just shut down, middle of intersections was always fun. Stopped right on the train lines one night for my wife while she was returning from work at midnight.
