Question who has done a GEN III or 5 ltr convertion

looking for info on wether you can get better fuel consumption than 30 ltr per 100 km from GEN III or 5 ltr as iam looking to do some long trips toeing camper trailer through remote areas and need range even with all the fuel i can carry is not enough betwween fueling stations and are there any pit falls that i need to know about with this convertion going into a 1990 RR 3.9 ltr

    Cheers

    G,Day mate

If its any help I have 2010 HSV GTS 6.2ltr LS3 M6 that gets around 13ltrs per 100kms city driving and also have 2 2010 VE SSV 6.0ltr utes (one manual & one auto) that get about the same lrts per 100km as the HSV. If you start giving them a hard time though thay love a drink (I wont tell you how bad the 94 Rangie is as you already know)

If you want to fall over, the 4 Kenworths I have with 600HP Cummins Signatures in them get about 2.2kms per 1ltr loaded

May be think about a TD5 conversion as Diesel isnt as hard to come by in remote areas. I am looking into a 4.6 or 6.2 LS3 conversion at the moment and it isnt cheap. TD5 conversion would more than likely be more cost effective and from what I understand it isnt had to wind them up.

    Cheers Gavin

Buy a defender - do the trip - sell it when you get back

you should break even and you could probably buy one for less than the conversion. Gotta have the right tool for the job!

there wont be too many hills in the remote areas where range is an issue.

heres the catch i have over $19k of extras and mods on it so buying something else to do the job would not have all that the RR has from diff locks to high mount winch and still got a few more things to build and add to it RR highly moded and will climb any thing RR is almost at comp level still a work in progress i love what it can do off road and do not real whant to rebuild something else

You can expect 15-16L/100 at best out of a stroked 5L or an LS1, stick a trailer on the back or stick your boot into it and fuel consumption rises rapidly

How much do you want to spend? what can you do yourself?

You can fit a 5L with marks plate easily to your ZF, they'll handle a stock engine not abused, but thats about the limit, the ultimate conversion would be 6L 4L80E and that would be complete porn, but you'll need to spend your accessories budget again

    Towing how many trailers?

I have heard that triple trailer road trains get around 1 km per litre.

Running singles @ 45.5T with heavy SPL drive lines, 4.56s ratios, RR18 speed, 15ltr 600hp Signature in K104s. All our work is tight access (in CBD stop start driving) so can only pull one trailer. Prime movers are 90t road train rated.

Also have 1 Freightliner Argosy (heap of S***) with a Detroit S60 14Ltr that gets about 2.6kms per ltr loaded. Its set at 550hp with 4.33s ,RR18 speed etc etc.

    Cheers
