    Thermo guns

Which one would be better out of either one of these?

HI TEMP NON-CONTACT IR INFRARED DIGITAL THERMOMETER GUN - eBay, Thermometers, Gadgets, Electronics. (end time 23-May-10 08:59:32 AEST)

NON-CONTACT IR INFRARED DIGITAL THERMOMETER -40 to 816C - eBay, Meters, Electrical, Industrial. (end time 01-Jun-10 19:18:28 AEST)

Do they also give you an ambient air temp if you just fire it into the air or do you need the thermocouple model to get this.

PS. Not required for any sort of seriously important jobs, so no real need to get a Fluke or similar.

My fluke unit gives values just above freezing when l shoot it straight up.
    And that's on a 40 + degree Pilbara day.

    cheers,

Of course. It measures radiation reflected from an object.

I have a thermocoupel probe just attached to a multimeter and it serves the purpose of measuring surface temp of say the inlet manifold. But I would rather an infrared as I would not have to get my fingers hot/burned. Remember that you need a straight shot with no obstructions for the Infra red to work.
I love it when people say "Oh the engine feels hot". Of course it does. It is designed to work at 80-100c and hot to a human is 40C.
