I hasten to add that the store didn't close before I got a new bull bar, 9500Lb ox winch, X-ray driving lights, Side bars & steps and 2inch suspension lift with XGS gold shocks, all at the right price.![]()
In November last year I left a job I had been in since 1987, the role had changed and the stress was huge and the general job wasn't enjoyable anymore.
So I saw an add for a sales job at TJM in Orange and thought "beaudy, that's right up my ally" Granted, I had to find a way to stop the natural "BULL**** reflex when customers were talking about how good their Toymotas were but I was enjoying it and we had really turned the local store around, a whole new team and a whole new approach, it was working. Sadly the state office and warehouse/retail store in Sydney was Fawlty Towers, I'll say no more.
Long story short. The boss came down from Bris and closed them down making us the last corporate store in the country and he couldn't justify the admin to keep us going so TJM Orange is no more.
For the first time since 1981 I find myself unemployed.

Steve,
Any chance they would consider a management buyout of the shop on vendor terms? A chance to get your own business in an industry you obviously enjoy. Not sure you wont have the stress again however.

Even though I started my own business 3 years ago and have more stress at time than I had when I ran someone else's business, It's the best damn thing I ever did, I love working for myself and I reackon it is all worth it. Steve if you can get vendor finance or a backer (talk to a couple of other owners who might be interested in putting some money in) go for it, you wont regret it!
Cheers Ian
Exciting time for you!
The world is full of opportunities.
I think the other guys are onto something:
- you have a customer base
- you have an established presence
- you have knowledge of the industry
Go for it.
The people of Orange need to buy their 4wd accessories from somewhere. If you can do it than why not take their money.
You could always charge more for anything toyota and if questioned say that Mr Rudd has imposed a tax on any vehicle that mining companies use.
I have considered it but I know the profit margins francisees make compared to corporate stores and don't know if it would work, it is in the back of my mind though.
I think the idea of charging more for toyota parts has great merrit![]()
It's reported on Exploroz that the sydney corporate store has also closed.
Regards Philip A
Well I had my first day in a new job today, simmilar to what I used to do before TJM and working to help build a locally owned business. No more corporate knobs who know nothing telling me how to do something I have been doing since they were still dirtying there nappies, just a bloke who wants me to use my experience to build part of his business.
